California Universities Will Cut Enrollment Unless State Increases Money

Hard hit by budget cuts, the California State University system is planning to cut its enrollment by 10,000 students for the 2009-10 academic year, unless state lawmakers provide more money.

“We can’t continue to admit more and more students without receiving adequate funding,” Chancellor Charles B. Reed said Monday.

It would be the first time in its history that the university system turned away students who met admissions standards, and the announcement was greeted with disappointment and anger.

“We have put the education system on a starvation diet, and each and every year it becomes weaker,” said Lt. Gov. John Garamendi, a trustee of the university, who joined 150 people on Tuesday in Long Beach to protest the state budget cuts.

“Students now take five years to graduate,” Mr. Garamendi added. “Professors we need we cannot hire, the men and women we need to keep our institutions going, keep the heat on, keep the air-conditioning going, keep the toilets flushing, cannot be hired. You cannot have the best education system in the world on the cheap.”

In an e-mail message on Tuesday to employees, Chancellor Reed explained

They' be better off cutting their bloated bureaucratic budgets and salaries and ridiculously unuseful classes.

They'll be begging for these 'cut' students with a year. Parents are going to start pulling their kids out like nobody's business by next Fall.

They’d save a lot of money by just not admitting students that couldn’t read or write. Go back to testing the students to get into the schools.

Having worked for the CSU, you should know they lost me due to low salary and had to replace me with 3 people.

The CSU and UC students have the best freaking deal on Higher Education in the entire world. But they cry the blues every time they are asked to put some skin in the game. Selfish and ungrateful.

Also, we are educating Mexico and Lain America’s cast-off’s children. Actually, make that ME, since damn near nobody else in California actually pays taxes, except for sales tax at the nearby Stop-n-Rob, anymore.

I’d say we’re on the right track then. Disappointment and anger though indicates to me that more cuts are in order.
Near violent demonstrations indicate to little a budget cut and staff suicides and other violence indicate some fairness in the budget cuts.

Then do it for crying out loud. Have these idiots heard yet? We’re broke and you’re lucky to have an open university.

Do they still have in-state tuition for illegal aliens in CA? Maybe stopping that would help. But, instead, they will probably get rid of citizen students.

Needs repeating endlessly until the pampered, elitist s.o.b.'s finally hear it. Talk about empire-building! An English professor at Cow Poly in San Luis Obispo once indignantly informed me that all professors, due to their great importance, should retire with at least a million dollar financial package. Those were 1980s taxpayer dollars he was talking about.

I imagine enrollments will decline anyway, with the loss of so many familys’ savings

Community college demand should go way up

That’s just what I was thinking. Kick out the illegal alien students out and that should make enough room for everyone.

Also cut back on the out of state admissions, especially in the University of California system. The taxpayers carry the weight of these college systems and their kids should come first.

Are they giving illegals in-state tuition prices?

Go to this link and decide whether the needed budget shortfall could be covered by eliminating a whole bunch of these courses:

Does the CSU system even charge tuition for their in-state students today or is it still tuition free?

I never understood the whole tuition free policy for California residents.

I’m afraid that the Illinois Governor’s corruption is small potatos compared to the insane pit of criminality that is California’s Education Bureaucracy. Ahnold should hire an outside auditing firm to go over their books. I’m sure that loads of prosecutions are awaiting.

They need to admit more really good athletic supporters and supportees, acting persons, transgendered individuals, revolutionaries and also the merely revolting, and cut back sharply on the number of normal people in the system. After all, normal schools are virtally prehistoric in the postmodern world that is Californica.

At a minimum, all those who have "Studies" in their title should be the first casualties.
