Senate sources confirm for me that Mel Martinez was the famous Senator Anonymous from three weeks ago. Martinez, not wanting him name used, told the Politico I dont think we have learned much from the election in terms of what people want to see. This senator said the Republicans needed someone who could speak from the center and wanted it known that Sarah Palin is not the voice of [the Republican] party.

You don't get that done with an "I'm right, you're a RINO" approach.
You have to build a coalition of varying interests, agendas and priorities that are better satisfied by voting for the GOP candidate over the Democrat candidate.
Politics is real world stuff.
No, i voted for Martinez simply to keep Betty Castor from geting the job.
You may recall that Castor was the former president of the University of South Florida who refused to fire Sami Al Arien the head fund raiser of many islamist terrorist groups.
She would have been even worse than Mel in my opinion.
Still believe that to be true.
Course you can make any accusation you care to. pal.
Sarah Palin is not the voice of [the Republican] party.
She might not be the voice of the Republican Party, but she´s fast becoming the voice of the people who used to support the Republican Party at any rate.
He is quitting, I guess Sarah won that round.
I hope whoever the next Chair of the GOP is will tell people like Martinez to take a long walk off of a short pier.
I doubt either of them view this decision through that lens.
Being a Senator is boring work when facing a career long minority status.
He probably doesn’t want to endure the hellish fundraising gauntlet.
I agree but a certain element at FR can’t seem to grasp this. I go hole hog for the conservative in the primaries and then vote the lesser of two evils in the general. I do think it is counter productive to allow so called independents to vote in the Republican primaries.
Social conservatives cannot win statewide office in roughly 38 of 50 states right now.
So, what's the plan?
Thanks for the alert! So now we know who!
We're not a club they wish to join.
Not sure why, but LOL.
Running conservatives.
I told this clown to stop sending me news letters from Sen Martinez some time ago when it became apparent he was an amnesty fan. He also voted for the bailout over my and most of my fellow Floridians told him we were against it (the Dem Senator Nelson voted against it on principle). I’d say leave now but Crist would only find someother RINO to put in his place.
I guess this case is closed! -)
Regards.
Ex-college university president who's never been elected to a high ranking political office before, running statewide as a Democrat in a strongly Republican state. Yep, no doubt that's a top tier unstoppable Democrat foe. The U.S. Senate is just choke full of them college university presidents elected in states controlled by the other party.
Yeah, Mel Martinez and his whooping 49-48% victory sure showed her. There's no way in hell the sitting Speaker of the Florida House, a well known U.S. Congressman (who later went on to hold statewide office as A.G. in a huge year for the Dems), the Chairman of the renowed Judicial Watch, etc., had any chance of beating a fearsome college president. A medoicre trial lawyer with zero accomplishments under his belt during his appointed tenure as Dubya's housing secretary was the only way to go if he wanted to "win" against the Castro machine and her fearsome track record of one term as a Hillsborough County Commissioner years ago.
Sure, your argument makes perfect sense.
People in his state can petition to recall.
Some freepers even get it backwards. They foist the "electable" RINO on us in the primary (Specter, Martinez, Sununu, Liddy Dole, Lisa Murcowski, etc.), and choose the general election to throw a temper tantrum and vote for an alledgedly "conservative" Democrat (one pledged to the likes of Pelosi and Reid) to "teach the GOP a lesson"
Hence the makeup of the current U.S. Senate can directly be attributed to the actions of many so-called "conservatives" who empower the enemy. Senators like Lieberman and Martinez wouldn't have gotten where they are today if it weren't for some "true conservative" freepers.
He beat the Democrat challenger for a six year Senate term. He has a 86.7% rating from the American Conservative Union during his four year tenure.
What is it that you want? Electoral failure?
