The continuing efforts of a fringe group of conservatives to deny Obama his victory and to lay the basis for the claim that he is not a legitimate president is embarrassing and destructive. The fact that these efforts are being led by Alan Keyes, an unhinged demagogue on the political fringe who lost a senate election to the then unknown Obama by 42 points should be a warning in itself.
This tempest over whether Obama, the child of an American citizen, was born on American soil is tantamount to the Democrats' seditious claim that Bush "stole" the election in Florida and hence was not the legitimate president. This delusion helped to create the Democrats' Bush derangement syndrome and encouraged Democratic leaders to lie about the origins of the Iraq War, and regard it as illegitimate as Bush himself. It became "Bush's War" rather than an American War with destructive consequences for our troops and our cause.
The Birth Certificate zealots are essentially arguing that 64 million voters should be disenfranchised because of a contested technicality as to whether Obama was born on U.S. soil. (McCain narrowly escaped the problem by being born in the Panama Canal zone, which is no longer American.)
What difference does it make to the future of this country whether Obama was born on US soil? Advocates of this destructive campaign will argue that the Constitutional principle regarding the qualifications for President trumps all others. But how viable will our Constitution be if 5 Supreme Court justices should decide to void 64 million ballots?
Conservatives are supposed to respect the organic nature of human societies. Ours has been riven by profound disagreements that have been deepening over many years. We are divided not only about political facts and social values, but also about what the Constitution itself means. The crusaders on this issue choose to ignore these problems and are proposing to deny the will of 64 million voters by appealing to 5 Supreme Court Justices (since no one is delusional enough to think that the 4 liberal justices are going to take the presidency away from Obama). What kind of conservatism is this?
It is not conservatism; it is sore loserism and quite radical in its intent. Respect for election results is one of the most durable bulwarks of our unity as a nation. Conservatives need to accept the fact that we lost the election, and get over it; and get on with the important business of reviving our country's economy and defending its citizens, and -- by the way -- its Constitution.
LOL
Ok, you asked for a reason and I gave you a possibility. Whether it’s nonsense, it could be or not. He does broadcast on Clear Channel stations so he’s connect to the MSM in that way.
This person is apparently unaware that we tried and tried to raise this issue BEFORE the election. No post-election shenanigans are going on here, as he not-so-subtley suggests. No sore losers. Just the simple, humble request that our government actually abides by the Constitution that governs it. TO proclaim that the question of Obama’s citizenship is somehow new or inconsequential is, frankly, disgraceful.
No, we don’t throw out 64 millions votes. Obama himself is just unable to attain the presidency. It is illegal. Joe Biden would be fully capable of staying on as vice president and filling the vacancy of president, I suppose. So the ticket that was elected in would still remain, ultimately, in power. Unless, of course, the fraud involved could be deemed significant enough to invalidate the election.
But most people aren’t calling for that extreme of a solution. We just want what we’ve been asking for for about eight months now - Obama to produce his birth certificate.
Why is that so hard? And why are we the bad guys for wanting something settled that Obama could settle in less than 15 seconds just by producing the document?
Hear! Hear!
My rationale precisely.
He’s right though that Keyes is an unhinged demagogue.
I don’t think it is a question of him being a citizen; per se. It has to do with natural born.
Of course, I do realize Obama is like the Clintons and believe they need to hide everything.
I also hear he stomps kittens!
So what?
I don't give a feces what Horowitz calls it. Comparing this to the 2000 election is totally specious. Funny how conservatives are now the "moonbats" according to the Left, and right on que "conservative" columnists want to get along to go along and be like the Cubs and say wait for next election.
Well, I don't care who is "disenfranchised" or seeing people weeping in the streets if Obama is disqualified. I don't care about the riots and I say bring them on. We need to have this fight and I'd rather have riots which will die down eventually and our Constitution emerging stronger than ever instead of seeing this travesty and our Republic going to pot.
David... the Dr. called:
He said you are suffering from RCI.
(Rectal Cranial Inversion) Please take your head out before you start spouting off about the birth certificate that Obama refuses to disclose!
Keyes might be; but sometimes mad men make sense.
Not sure yet why he's taken this tack.
I think a whole lot of people are trying to redefine conservative... and the constitution.
I think, as a nation, we had better look to those "rebels"... those fringed fanatic founders.
The fact that you think the fact that his mother was a U.S. citizen decides the issue shows that you haven’t been paying attention.
Obama is almost certainly NOT a U.S. citizen—not when he was born, and not NOW.
They are just followers. They are afraid to be wrong.
You've been here for 10 years - read up on this instead of shooting from the hip.
The New York Times, Washington Post, and I think the LA Times all ran articles from about March to July about McCain's eligibility question to be president. And not a peep out these guys about Obama's natural born citizen problem.
So who are the loons us or the MSM?
“They are just followers. They are afraid to be wrong.”
###
You are right.
So why don’t they just say:
“Look, I believe Obama is qualified but we MUST follow the Constitution regarding eligibility. He must pass through the Constitutional filter, which can be as simple as producing a valid birth certificate. This is neither an unfair or purely technical matter. It is the law”
