Supporters of a proposed Los Angeles voter initiative that would allow police to arrest illegal-immigrant gang members solely for being in the country illegally said they collected enough petition signatures before Friday's deadline to qualify the measure for the May ballot.
The signatures still need to be verified by the Los Angeles city clerk's office, a process that could take up to three weeks. Proponents, who needed to gather 73,963 signatures from valid registered voters in the city, said they had submitted more than 76,000.
Jamiel's Law, as it is known, is named after 17-year-old Los Angeles High School football player Jamiel Shaw II, who was gunned down in March allegedly by a reputed gang member who was in the country illegally. The measure would modify the Los Angeles Police Department's Special Order 40, which prohibits officers from initiating contact with individuals for the sole purpose of determining whether they are illegal immigrants.
Immigrant-rights advocates and LAPD Chief William J. Bratton strongly oppose Jamiel's Law, saying it is unnecessary and opens a backdoor to "racial profiling" by law enforcement. Bratton, when testifying before the City Council in April, said officers already have the authority to tell immigration authorities when known gang members have committed crimes.

I don't want it to open a back door, I want it to throw open the front door. Cops know the score and the anti-rp crowd contributes to lawbreaking and the liberal insanity. Cops certainly know when they see some White guys cruising through a poor Black neighborhood in their Beemers and Mercedes that they ain't there to soak in the atmosphere of the ghetto, they're there for drugs or whores, and they don't belong there. Racial profiling works to curb crime, period. Let's stop hog-tying the cops and let them do their damn jobs.
I really hope this passes. I moved the family from my home town of L.A., partly because of the gang infestation.
Now, if it does pass, we just have to hope that the police will be allowed to enforce it. Special Order 40 is in direct conflict with it.
Watch for the uber-libs to fight this just as hard as they fought Prop 8. I tell you, folks in that state are suicidal.
Heck, the majority of the City Council have been known to show up at Si Si Puede’ protests, especially Mayor Villa La Raza. There are hidden pockets of conservatism in L.A. judging by the tide of voters who voted Yes to prop 8 but it’s an uphill climb especially when the majority population are of mexican descent.

Dam’nfoolishness!
“Immigrant-rights advocates”? What’s that? When you immigrate legally you integrate and become just like everyone else. So what we’re actually talking about here is “Illegal-Alien rights advocates”. What rights do Illegal Aliens have, anyway?
“You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of Law. You have the right to speak to an attorney...”
And WHY is the LAPD Chief strongly opposed to this law? I guess it means that he and his cops will finally have to do some hard work for a change.
You Yanks in California ought to vote his lazy arse out of office as soon as practical. He is a liability to your community, not an asset.
And finally, “racial profiling”??? If most of your crims are Mexican, doesn’t it make sense to focus on Mexican perps rather than, say, Japanese perps? Makes sense to me. But then I’m just a dumb foreigner.
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Supporters of a proposed Los Angeles voter initiative that would allow police to arrest illegal-immigrant gang members solely for being in the country illegally...”
Good.
There are more than enough laws on the books to fix the problem. You have no court system, no police force, and no political figures willing to do their job. They continue to blame something...to avoid discussing reality. The public in California are naive enough to believe this whole thing. If this were Alabama or Tennessee then the law enforcement folks would go out and do what they have to do...because the public expects that....but this is California....addicted to loser behavior.
If 98% of illegals are Mexican, how can it be profiling?
It boggles the mind.
Yep, no doubt about it, there are even illegal aliens that would vote for that specific measure, but no.
pnh102 said it right, in order to Affect change, get rid of the dolts in control. Well we can hope...
I pray for Californians, New Yourkers, Chicagoans, Bostonians, and yes, even the GD Detriotithans/ (Detrothlodites?) to get a clue.
[The last time Detriot was cool was when KISS toured there]
I ain’t holding my breath, but good luck.
Be an illegal in Germany, in 1943 and see what you got, bunky.
i agree with you. I just thought, that even if the law gets passed, next they gotta find cops that are willing to go into the hoods and barrio’s to arrest these illegals, that may be why the police chief does not want this to become law. just thinking ya know
Good news!
This is still the USA and anything is possible. I am going to go out on a limb and suggest that most of the Latino population in CA are not illegals. Most of them are probably hard working, God fearing people who want to succeed just as much as anyone else. We need to convince these people that they too have a common enemy in illegals from any country.
I wonder how many US citizens of Latino descent have lost jobs to illegals?
I part-time near the Fashion District in L.A. and I once told a couple of the guys in the warehouse that a “guy without papers” could take your job away from them because they are cheaper. Some of them got it. Some of them got rubbed the wrong way. This place I part-time at was raided by ICE more than twice so the Iranian Jew owners then only hired people who are here legally.
This is important. If this passes, it will help the entire country.
I can remember when California was a great place to live. I'm glad that I grew up there in a time when the state was more conservative and sane.
Up until the time I was perhaps 25 or so (mid 70's), California law enforcement behaved much like in the rest of the country. Violent gangs couldn't get a foothold, because police chiefs like Bill Gates of Los Angeles wouldn't allow it. They crushed the seeds before they could grow. It made for a more flourishing and safe environment for all.
Sometime in the 80's it all began to break down. Just a trickle at first, but more and more as time went on. By the late 90's, the situation with illegals and gangs had gotten so bad, that the entire character of the city began to change. By the mid 00's, it was all over. The lunatics are now running the place, and the horde is destroying the landscape.
I moved my family out when the horde finally reached the outskirts of town, where I kept my home.
One can only hope that the good citizens of Los Angeles will at some point throw out the loser government, and put strong-willed executives in their place. They've got to end the nightmare, or relinquish the city to the Huns.
I think that, ironically, Reagan played a big role in getting this all started, by falling for and signing the Immigration “Reform” and Control Act in 86. Hard lesson well learned for the rest of us still here.
