Palin proposes new funds to benefit children
Anchorage Daily News ^ | December 5, 2008 | Sean Cockerham

Gov. Sarah Palin is calling for more state spending on children's health insurance, preschool and other programs, even as Alaska oil prices and state revenues plunge.

Cash flow into the state is shrinking as oil prices drop below $40 a barrel, the lowest level in nearly four years. Most state general fund money comes from taxes and royalties the state makes from oil. But Palin said the state can afford more than $5 million in new spending on areas like Head Start, obesity prevention, a test program of half-day preschool, and expanded Denali KidCare insurance.

This is a conservative? Proposing MORE spending on social programs? We've entered the Age Of Obama early!

Once the oil runs out she’s going to need some tax dollars to pay for all of these wonderful programs!!

Maybe she needs to let the private sector fund this stuff. Whatever happened th the Thousand Points of Volunteer Light??? Do we really need a state program to hand out these goodies?

Some CONSERVATIVE!!! Let’s run her for president of Kukamongastaaahn!

I really like Palin, and it’s really important America takes care of its kids, but on its face, this looks like ‘compassionate’ spending. In her defense, State level spending is certainly different than Federal.

Jindal voted for the child healthcare (SCHIP) while in Congress too. I don’t know what’s with these people and these programs.

I still relatively like Palin and Jindal, but I’ve said it before, Mark Sanford is porbably THE most conservative governor in the country in terms of fical resposibility and limited government. I’d vote for him above the other two.

I don’t get what the big deal is. Her state doesn’t need a bailout, they have plenty of money. This is not the first time she has tried doing this, in fact, she has tried doing this since she became Governor, she always has opposition on the Democratic side. She wants more funding for kids education and health, how is that a bad sign?

Sanford's very impressive. I heard him speak at a press conference after the govs met with Obama. Palin spoke on energy issues as well.

Sanford wrote an interesting post-mortem on Politico entitled What's Next for the GOP? :

“There needs to be a high standard for our franchisees. In other words, I believe Republicans and conservatives must agree on our core principles. St. Augustine called for “unity in the essentials, diversity in the nonessentials, and charity in all things,” and while I believe there should always be a big GOP tent, there must also be a shared agreement on the essentials — including expanding liberty, encouraging entrepreneurship and limiting the reach of government in people’s everyday lives.”

I think people are really fooling themselves if they believe Palin is a true blue conservative... She’s a SOCIAL conservative.. but she’s definitely more of a moderate on the other issues.

That sounds like what the proponents of SCHIP used to say.

People are reacting like this is the first time she has tried this. She has proposed this twice already during her role as governor. It’s not like poof she did this, she proposed this twice, its in her record, nothing new here. I don’t get what the issue is here

Mark Sanford meets all the requirements for a Republican Presidential candidate who can win the White House. He is an Anglo-Saxon Christian Conservative governor from the South. On the top of that he is young, charismatic, and his looks will charm many women.

"...how is that a bad sign?"

It's just NOT the proper role of government according to all the genuine conservatism I've ever encountered!!!

Rush just gushed to Barbara WaWa on national TV that "I love Sarah Palin!" I wonder if he's aware of any of this...

I am not bailing out on her because I do not support her to be the Republican presidensital nominee 4 years form now. If she decideds to run and she is nominated then I will support her 100%. I like her but I do not think that she can win a national election. Mark Sanford is a more powerful candidate if he decides to run in 2012.

Anyway 2012 is far away and it is all academic now. I do not even know what is going to happen tomorrow.
