Committee considers tax for every mile driven

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Imagine being taxed for every mile you drive each year.

"I don't like that. I don't like that at all. That's just more money out of our wallets," said Jason Gillespie of Charlotte.

"I think that's a crazy idea," agreed Chrissy White.

While it may sound outrageous to some, it's an idea being considered by the 21st Century Transportation Committee in Raleigh. Their mission is to come up with new ways to help pay for North Carolina's growing roads and transit needs.

"I don't need another tax. It's something else that I can't afford," said White.

The so-called "odometer tax" would be collected during a vehicle owner's annual inspection, either in place of or in conjunction with the current gas tax.

Though no specific amount has been determined yet, supporters' examples suggest a charge of a quarter-cent to a half-cent per mile per passenger vehicle. That comes out to about $25 to $50 for every 10,000 miles driven.

"I think government should do a better job of managing their own business," said small business owner John Brantley. "As the small person, why are we having to pay the tax for everyone else?"

The committee is made up of non-legislative and legislative members. Its goal is to make recommendations to the General Assembly early next year.

Supporters say the odometer tax could generate as much as $330 million annually for the state.

Good, when they do that they can drop the ad valorem tax and state gas taxes on cars, then. Double, triple, and quadruple taxation is what’s coming folks!

Terrible idea, but... it would be one of the few taxes an illegal would have to pay.

They should get ripping off the gas tax for the general fund.

I don’t know much about horses, but they would probably be cheaper to feed.

supporters' examples suggest beginning with a charge of a quarter-cent to a half-cent per mile per passenger vehicle

The rate will be permitted to increase, of course, at the legislature's convenience and greedy desire.

It’s none of the governments business how many miles I drive per year.

Not a good idea, but less evil than Oregon’s Big-Brotherish notion of using GPS transponders to track your car (allegedly for similar ‘road tax’ reasons).

I suspect that when the tax gets much above the cost of installing a new odometer you’ll suddenly see a whole lot of odometers that suddenly get unreliable shortly before inspection.

NC can eliminate their financial problem for years to come by drilling for oil of the coast.

The Dems have taken over every office in this state and it will continue to be one of the highest taxed states in the country. I wonder if folks in NC will ever wake up to what is going on here - I think it’s too late anyway.

So when you NC residents drive out of state you would be paying NC tax?
