Franken campaign claims first lead in recount

Al Franken’s campaign claims it now holds a 22-vote lead in the U.S. Senate race with just 138,000 votes left to be recounted. This figure contrasts with other tabulations, based on numbers from the Minnesota Secretary of State’s Office, that show Coleman maintaining a 303-vote lead.

The Franken numbers differ in a couple of respects from the SOS data. Most importantly the Democratic camp’s vote tally relies on the call made by local election officials in determining which candidate an individual intended to support. By contrast the other tallies don’t take into consideration the roughly 6,000 ballots that have been challenged by both campaigns. In addition, the Franken campaign’s figures include recount data that came in after the SOS’s 8 p.m. daily deadline for posting information.

Marc Elias, the Franken campaign’s lead recount attorney, stated at a press conference today that he believes an overwhelming majority of the challenges will ultimately be ruled to be without merit. “Thus when we set out internally to decide how we track the results thus far, we assume that all of the challenges, on both sides, will be overruled by the canvassing board,” he noted, “and that the judgment of the neutral, non-partisan election official at the counting table will be upheld.”

Elias also announced that the Franken campaign intends to rescind 633 challenges that it has determined are without merit. Unless the Coleman campaigns takes similar action, this means that Coleman’s lead as tabulated using the SOS figures will likely grow when the new figures are released this evening. As of last night the Republican’s campaign had challenged 183 more ballots than its Democratic counterpart.

The final four counties — Winona, Rock, Redwood and Wright — began their recounts today. The entire process is expected to conclude by Friday.

Not going to happen....93% of vote counted and Coleman has increased his lead to over 300. Even the 171 ‘found’ ballots only netted Frnaken 37 more votes. Coleman will win and the US Senate will not intervene because Chambliss shattered their dream of 60 votes. franken can cry all he wants, but there is no way he can put enough of a fix in to steal the election now. By Friday all he will have left is a lawasuit.

They're not going through this to make sure that the right man wins. This is classic Democrat strategy to steal an election. Get it close and then recount until you get the desired results.

I can’t help being pessimistic...nothing stopped any of the other dem candidates from “finding” enough votes to put them over the top, why would this be any different? It’s almost funny, I was WAITING for the “Franken finds uncounted ballots” story.

So does that mean we stop counting? Or keep counting to see if he can maintain his lead? How many other missing ballots are there?

At 1% margin with multiple candidates in the race, it should trigger an automatic RUNOFF rather than “recount”. Recount when there are only 2 people.

This is the first funny thing Franken has said in a long time.

This is just like Pravda telling us Stalin is alive and well.

Maybe MN should just have a do-over. Given that ‘rats are lazy (documented by the hugh Saxby win in GA), Franken would be sent packing (and I don’t mean with heat).

Nice try. But Bush was in the lead in all counts save for when the dems decided to recount only selected heavily democrat counties.

The US Supreme Court put a stop to that selective bias. If it had proceeded the dems would have ‘found’ votes as they always do in close elections, and Gore would have been President.

The dems in 2000 tried to steal the election but were stopped. That is why to this day they say ‘Bush was Selected’ which is a lie. Bush was saved from dem voter fraud.

So your analogy is without merit.

"Intended to support"

They're counting, "intended supporters" as votes?!? Are they goofy - don't answer that. Sheesh, I once "intended" to buy a Lamborghini, but I didn't. So I can't go around saying I actually "owned" one. Or maybe I could in Frankenworld.

The whole dam Franken camp needs to be committed to an insane asylum asap, starting with the lawyers.

“Every close race has somehow ended up as Dem victory:”

“Bush 2000?”

Yep, I still chuckle about Bush 2000. The Dems cheated in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Florida and they still lost. Ole GW outsmarted them and they have never forgiven him for it.

Sorry but while your analysis of the 2000 election in Florida is pretty accurate, the point E-MC2 was making, the way I read it, is that the Republicans have won close elections, which is true. In fact we won the most important race, for president, in a close race.

I don't believe he commented on how, just that we won a close election. And he is correct.

the call made by local election officials in determining which candidate an individual intended to support.

This should certainly be illegal. Only the voter can determine which candidate the intended to support. The way they do that is to properly fill out their ballot. There should never be anyone else trying to decipher their intent.

Recount, recount, recount, until a single tally results in a lead for your candidate. Then shout loudly that the “people’s will has finally been known!”

A well-known and well-used Democratic strategy.
