Israeli embassy in Serbia has handed its highest award to children and grandchildren of Serbs who risked their lives to save Jews from death during World War Two.
Israeli Ambassador to Serbia, Arthur Koll, awarded the descendants of Borivoje and Grozdana Bondzic, Ljubica Mandusic-Gazikalovic and Jelica Rankovic with the “Righteous among the Nations” medals because they risked their lives to save Jews during World War Two.
“With the deepest of respect I fulfill my duty today and hand the Righteous among the Nations medals to those who risked their own lives by saving Jews during World War Two,” Israeli Ambassador to Serbia Arthur Koll said at the awards ceremony.
During the World War Two, Nazis have executed and sent to concentration camps many Jews and Serbs. The most notorious concentration camp was managed by Croatia.
Ljubica Mandušic-Gazikalovic and her daughter Jelica built a special sanctury on their house property in the Serbian Kosovo town of Prizren where the entire family of Josef Levi lived from 1941 to 1943 in order to escape the Nazi pogroms.
Kosovo Albanians were Nazi allies during WWII and today claim that Kosovo is an independent state. Very few, if any, Serb and Jews now remain in Prizren.
Upon reception of the award Jelica Rankovic broke into tears.
“I am saddened that my mother did not live to experience this moment,” said Jelica Rankovic said.
Ambassador Koll noted that “Their courage and selflessness will forever remain in our memory”.
Ambassador Koll said that hate, racism, xenophobia and anti-Semitism still exist “as if history has taught us nothing”, however, the Ambassador cited the example of Serbs as acts of heroism that should be “like a lighthouse showing the way to a better future.”
“Their courage and selflessness will forever remain in our memory,” Ambassador Koll said.
The title of “Righteous among the Nations” is the highest honor that the state of Israel awards to non Jews.
The names of the recipients of this award also get their names engraved at the Vad Jasim holocaust memorial center in Jerusalem.

I hope it dispels the notion that the Serbs are responsible for villainy in the Balkans.
Someone still remembers the role The Serbs played resisting fascism.
Yeah, hoping and praying that the Albanian Nazis didn't turn them in. This is the region that also produced the WWII AlbanianSkenderbeg SS Division
My understanding is that the Cliff’s Notes version of WWII in the Balkans was Serbs good, Bosnians and Croats bad.
This is a an unprecedented case where Nazi revisionists have support of American Government.
United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM), a Federal funded institution was a hotbed of this Nazi revisionist propaganda.
USHMM was even so brazen to invite notorious Holocaust denier on it's formal opening ceremony
The revisionist in question, Franjo Tudjman, outdid David Irving and claimed that only 900 000 Jews were killed in WWII and that Jews run Croatian Nazi concentration camp Jasenovac.
Much of this garbage has found it's way to academia and will poison future generations.
Federally funded is why they had to follow the State Dept’s “advice” and invite him as the freely elected President of Croatia.
Post-war, Croatia was reabsorbed into Yugoslavia, so that declaration of war was never actually withdrawn.
Then after the prayer service, we walked up to the park on the north side of the White House, where we could see the snipers on several surrounding buildings, I guess protecting us from harm.
Ever since then, of course, I have always considered the Holocaust Museum a scheme to make people feel guilty about what they approve you feeling guilty about, and not really about historical accuracy as such.
Thank God Clinton bombed the hell out of these Serbians in favor of those wonderful Muslim Albanians. I’m sure those Muslims really love us now!
In the mean time, Serbia is sitting right there letting others babysit the Albanian brats of Kosovo while the UN foots the bill. Good. Thanks. Another 20 or 50 years of the UN taking it's turn would be nice, but Serbia is pretty close to being able to handle things again if the time is sooner.
Yes, that’s the idiot’s version for idiots.
That declaration is null and void since the Republic of Croatia is the legal descendant of SR Croatia and not NDH.
The communists revised the numbers upwards. Only 530,000 Serbs died during WW2 across the whole of Yugo.
I have seen this on a great many sites. Part of the rewrite of history beganin earnest when Clinton aided and abetted the jihadists and bombed Belgrade for 78 straight days. An unholy alliance is trying to rewrite history..
The rewrite began when the communists exaggerated the numbers.
