The eight young women attended high school together and worked together part-time at the Good Samaritan nursing home in Albert Lea, Minn.
A criminal complaint filed Monday says they also laughed together early this year as they spat in residents' mouths, poked and groped their breasts and genitals and at times taunted them until they screamed -- or witnessed those events.
Charged Monday with maltreatment of seven residents were Brianna Marie Broitzman, 19, who faces 11 charges, and Ashton Michelle Larson, 18, who faces 10. Neither returned calls Monday seeking a comment or the name of their attorneys.
The six others, all 17 years old at the time of the alleged abuse, were identified only by birthdates and initials. Four were charged Monday in juvenile court with failure to report maltreatment.
The allegations became public in August when state Health Department inspectors concluded that four aides, to make their "work fun," had abused 15 frail residents.
Broitzman and Larson were charged Monday with fifth-degree assault, abuse of a vulnerable adult by a caregiver, abuse of a vulnerable adult with sexual contact, disorderly conduct and failing to report suspected maltreatment. All are gross misdemeanors, with a maximum penalty of a year in jail and a $3,000 fine for each count.
If found guilty, "they most likely will face suspended jail sentences and probation, so they'd have the threat of jail hanging over them if they get in more trouble," said Freeborn County Attorney Craig Nelson, who filed the charges Monday.

The little “B’s” will be old one day too. I hope they get karma big time.
I would think a fortnight in stocks out in front of the nursing home might be a far more appropriate punishment...
But it won't fix their souls. Heinous human beings.
In World War II, my dad fought part of the war in the Middle East. He said that the thing the pilots feared most was to be shot down and captured by tribal Arabs, who would turn them over to the women of the tribe to be tortured. Apparently those of the fairer sex were even more ingenious and more sadistic in their application of excruciating torture than the menfolk.
From what I hear, this is true among modern American females too, in a more attenuated form. This case certainly tends to prove it.

to me, all that a nursing home symbolizes is the decay of the American family and society in general.
They need jail time with some really mean cell mates.
And they had better listen to the warning this time, or they might just get warned again! And next time the warning will be much sterner than all the other previous warnings!
Reading this makes me weep for those poor frail victims.
What horror for them to go through in the last years of their lives.
"Elder abuse" needs to be kicked up several notches, penaltywise....
That said, Justice is an aspect of 'karma'; too bad it now, seldom offers a balanced redress of 'harm done'. So we are too often forced to imagine the 'other Karma' kicking in at some later date and time and one, not of 'our' choosing.
That is sickening!
They would have more to worry about than the “threat of jail hanging over them if they get in more trouble” if any of the nursing home patients had been my family members I can guarantee you that!
Who raises these animals anyway?! If they don’t respect these elderly people who can’t fend for themselves I doubt they respect much of anything.
Disgusting pieces of garbage!
Alright JRios1968. Decide guilt. Then go back and read the article.
Among the American indian tribes it was the women who were the most creative practitioners of torture of prisoners and wounded enemies. U.S. Cavalrymen learned early on that the worst of fates was to fall captive or fall wounded and be left behind and be turned over to the squaws.
Wifey and I did the rounds of the local places about three years ago, since we're the ones that live closest to Mom (at the time, Dad was 93 and still with us)....the experience of just touring these dumps solidified our decision to let the parental assets go to the caregiver agency, versus a nursing facility.
Dad left us a bit over a year ago, and Mom (with her dementia thingie going on) seems to be much happier at home. I keep close tabs on the live-ins also; un-announced visits quite regularly.
I guess the old dh and I should go lie down by the stream in the midst of winter, rather than depend on the .gov or our children in not so many years from now.
Seems easier, in so many ways.
As is typical in many jurisdictions.
I talked with a cop over Thanksgiving who told me how shocked and upset everyone was when a judge in his area actually called in the suspended sentences of a habitual offender!
Could we get some background please. Parents? Favorite books? Favorite movies. . .pastimes. . .hobbies. . .pets. . .siblings? Spoiled. . .perhaps?
We can guess; but would like to know the 'rest of the story here' because we need to know how it is; that so many Paraents in America are growing a vast culture of misfits. . .
Altogether, sickening.
