Barack Obama to buy rare £20,000 gold ring for his wife.
The ring is made of rhodium - the world's most expensive metal --encrusted with diamonds. It is being hastily made by Italian designer Giovanni Bosco in time for January's inauguration ceremony.
Only about 25 tons of rhodium are mined each year, mostly in South Africa, and as a result its price is typically around £5,000 an ounce.

Americans are losing their savings, their jobs, and their homes. Many can't afford the cost of nutritous food for their families, but Obama can shuck out $20K for a bracelett - that's the way to show "change" and "good for the common man" in America. Chi, London,+UK, 30/11/2008
He's a man of the people all right - a multi millionaire that holds the lower classes in contempt, whilst sticking his wealth in their faces with outrageous purchases. Now theres change you can believe in! Mark, Melbourne, 1/12/2008
He relied on the goodwill of the American People to be elected (ie people used their own funds) so he should be setting an example to the rest of the Americans telling them to save money during the hard times up until the economic situation begins to improve. Let us hope that he does not turn out to be similar to vast majority of other African leaders who happen to be in the 'game' for the sake of personal financial gains nil, London UK, 1/12/2008

***The media is the real problem in this country — has been for a long time.***
America’s Fourth Estate is the Fifth Column.
I do not understand the left’s fascination with this woman. She is a heifer.
Where did a community activist from a poor family serving as a part time state legislator and first term US Senator get this kind of money? While Obama’s books generated some money they were not exactly best sellers. US Senators are overpaid, but I doubt many could afford such a bauble unless they had family or business wealth outside their Senate job. The Clintons didn’t have that kind of money until after they left the White House.
Is that any way to talk about the lamestreams’ new play toy, a drastically dumbed-down/down market version of Jackie Kennedy? Let them enjoy their new Scamalot. It’s what they live for (as opposed to decent journalism).
*sigh* My favorite ring was the $109 Irish wedding band my husband bought at a pawn shop. Sadly, my daughter liked it too, picked it up when I was asleep (it was hot and I had put it on my nightstand) shortly before a move and lost it. I have been without a pretty ring like that for a decade, because we had other things we had to spend money on. But, it’s nice to know Obama can get his wife a nice gold ring to show his frugality.
Let’s see if the media, who made a big deal about Sarah Palin’s wardrobe during the campaign, even give this honorable mention in any of their reports.
Where does Obama’s campaign money go, now that the campaign is done?
I don’t care for it either. Not very attractive to me.
But, but, but...I thought he was just a regular guy, just like me! He’s all for hope and change! He’s going to pay my mortgage and fill up my gas tank.
Ha! It’s only a matter of time before the clueless masses that voted him in will see the err of their ways (I hope).
I was there 6 months ago.
FUGLY!
If it's the latter, isn't that a violation of Senate ethics rules...?
mewzilla’s law: The length and happiness of the marriage is inversely proportional to the cost of the ring.
I wonder if those are blood diamonds....
The ring is rhodium, which according to the article costs about $7500 an ounce. Gold is around $789 an ounce.
Here’s one on ebay for $1350.

Ick, but that’s just me. Nothing on the provenance of the diamonds I see.
It’s kind of manly, perfect for Michelle when she graduates from her “anger management classes”.
He’s denying it. http://news.yahoo.com/s/politico/20081202/pl_politico/26698
Dang. That was my first thought as well.
