Bush: `I'm sorry' the economic crisis is occurring

WASHINGTON (AP) - President George W. Bush expressed remorse that the global financial crisis has cost jobs and harmed retirement accounts and said he'll back more government intervention if needed to ease the recession.

"I'm sorry it's happening, of course," Bush said in a wide-ranging interview with ABC's "World News," which was airing Monday. "Obviously I don't like the idea of people losing jobs, or being worried about their 401(k)s. On the other hand, the American people got to know that we will safeguard the system. I mean, we're in. And if we need to be in more, we will."

The U.S. economy fell into a recession in December 2007, the National Bureau of Economic Research reported on Monday. Many economists believe the current downturn will last until the middle of 2009 and will be the most severe slump since the 1981-82 recession.

On the war in Iraq, Bush said the biggest regret of his presidency was the "intelligence failure" regarding the extent of the Saddam Hussein threat to the United States. With the support of Congress, Bush ordered the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in March 2003—a decision largely justified on grounds—later proved false—that Saddam was building weapons of mass destruction.

"A lot of people put their reputations on the line and said the weapons of mass destruction is a reason to remove Saddam Hussein," he said. "That's not a do-over, but I wish the intelligence had been different, I guess."

Asked if he would have ordered the U.S.-led invasion if intelligence reports had accurately indicated that Saddam did not have the weapons, Bush replied: "You know, that's an interesting question.

The main thing he should be sorry for is redrawing a nation’a boundaries and recognizing a terrorist muslim statelet in Europe: kosovo.

That and allowing thousands of Muslims into this country most of whom hate everything we stand for.

Ever since he did the disgusting petrodollar sword dance with the Saudi terror family he’s gone goofy.

We have not been attacked since 9/11. Will Obama get to say the same?

My Magic Eight Ball is saying, "MY SOURCES SAY NO."

Bush was electable but he was not prepared. I blame those in the Republican Party who put personality before principle and sold him as the GOPs best candidate for President.

My wife observed he’s back to hitting the bottle the last 4 years.

And just how in hell did your dear wife observe this?!? The Globe rag at the grocery check out stand?!?

I don't which is the stupidest, her saying it or you repeating it...pretty much a toss up, y'all deserve each other!

He didn’t have the gray matter necessary.

And it takes oodles of gray matter to sit at a keyboard, slamming the President of the USA...a president that has kept your condemning, pecking finger and your sorry, ungrateful ass safe for 7+ years!

News flash:

Dick Cheney was seen campaigning for Senator Saxby Chambliss in Georgia, the day before the crucial election.

Cheney was wearing a bag over his head, but was otherwise in good spirits.

You're an idiot, plain and simple...and not funny in the least.

I'd tell you to, "Grow up!"...but, I have a feeling you are way past the age that if you were going to do that, it would have happened many decades ago.

That’s right, George, take the blame for EVERYTHING!
With Republicans like you, who needs Democrats?
In your waning days, you remind me more and more of, what’s his name....uhhhh,,,oh yeah....John McCain.

What the leftists will hear: “I’m sorry about the war. I’m sorry about the invasion. I’m sorry about the economy. I pretty much screwed up everything, didn’t I?”

That's what I'm hearing too. This and excerpts from a Charlie Gibson interview show Bush is on tour apologizing to the Democrats.

How I just love Laura Ingraham & Governor Palin. Strong and well-spoken women!

As an aside, President George W. Bush has also done well and everyone "tearing him down" on this thread forgets the weak underpinnings he inherited from President Bill Clinton a few months earlier. It's a miracle 9/11 didn't happen sooner.
History will ultimately paint a glowing picture of GWB, once the leftist filter is removed, to show the excellent man he was and remains to this day.

I agree there is no equivalence here. Intelligence is a necessary but not sufficient condition for competent leadership. Unfortunately the necessity part ruled out Bush as a competent leader. :)

She was a dummy to tell people not to vote for Ted Stevens, she could of had his Senatorial seat.

She wasn't interested in the senate and you expose your own ethos by labeling one a "dummy" for siding with decency.

“President Bush has been an excellent President. The only shortcoming was his lack of comfort at public speaking.
This current recession is certainly not his fault.”
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>..................
who's fault is it?? oh I know, everyone but the president.

Mr. President, you were handed a very bad hand with national insecurity. Some folks have forgotten how you stood up on 9/11 to do the job at hand. Our country could have sunk into economic h*ll at that time, but it did not. I disagree with your immigration stance, but I understand your heart. I think this crisis was created to open up a power vacuum. This was not your fault. It happened with Greenspan who double crossed you, along with many others. In a couple of years I think others will long for the days of your Presidency.

Gush! You'd probably also forgive Pontius Pilate for being handed "problems" he didn't want either. Being in charge means making sound leadership decisions to avoid mistakes. Bush apparently knew that Freddie and Fannie were gambling with a meltdown but didn't step into the housing credit issue because construction was booming, economic times were good and real estate always appreciated in the past. I could give him a pass on that but, IMO, he also gambled with the blood and lives of those in uniform who protect this country I love in that he chose the Rumsfeld strategy of limited warfare over the sound military principle of overwhelming force in hoping that we'd be "welcomed as heroes" ... and, for that, he'll live forever in my infamous dustbin of failed presidential legacies!

Not only does he not possess the gray matter necessary; he lacks the chemical DNA for leadership proving that the apple doesn’t fall far from his “Read My Lips” old man’s tree.

when your goal is not victory don’t go to war. Bush has been shown to be a man of very limited vision and prone to
appease those who attack him..perhaps the AA meetings took a toll..he looks today like a binge drinker to me. Sad I voted for him twice but look at the alternatives.

Oh, never mind.
