A Fayetteville teacher whose classroom encounter with a young John McCain supporter created a stir on YouTube has confirmed that she was given a disciplinary letter.
But Diatha Harris said an internal investigation of her conduct cleared the veteran educator of violating state law or Cumberland County Board of Education policy.
Harris, 53, was videotaped in the spring by a Swedish film crew, leading a classroom discussion about the 2008 presidential election with fifth-graders at Mary McArthur Elementary School.
During the discussion, Harris called the Iraq war “senseless” and told her pupils that U.S. troops could stay in Iraq for 100 years if McCain was president.
“So that means that your daddy could stay in the military for another hundred years,” Harris told pupil Cathy Thompson in the classroom footage.
In other scenes shot outside the classroom, Harris sports a Barack Obama campaign button.
The video aired in a documentary broadcast on Finnish television earlier this month. A blogger posted snippets from the broadcast on YouTube, and Internet viewers responded by bombarding Superintendent Bill Harrison’s office with calls for Harris to be fired.

Whew! What a relief! I thought Afro-Leninists were endemic throughout the government school system and were systematically brainwashing young Americans into thinking that Marxist sleeper agents were the only acceptable choices for executive office! I sure am glad I was wrong.

This particular English-challenged beast would have to improve her skills drastically come up to the level of “mediocre.” It is horrifying to know that people like this are teaching children year after year. God help us.

She received an angry letter... How very disconcerting for her. I guess they are using the UN technique on her. If she does it again they will have no choice but to resort to more drastic measures... maybe ANOTHER angry letter.

Can’t you just imagine the hell this same teacher would give another student who’d similarly bullied the little girl on any other subject?
If it were my kid, I would DEMAND a transfer to a better school, maybe private, and insist that the district absorb all courts. And, maybe for fun, even sue the teacher and shool district for emotional trauma to my daughter ... just make their lives miserable.
A letter of reprimand is totally inappropriate.
A radio station has her and some parents on to make excuses for her behavior.
