That's an exaggeration, of course.

Barack Obama is biracial, not black.

And it's not half the country diving, but a goodly portion of us, judging by soaring gun sales post-Election Day that have even hit Hampton Roads.

"Stock up on guns, ammunition, and canned goods," a reader named "Church Slave" suggests in our online Topix system. "And maybe a candy bar or two."

I'm no stranger to the idea of laying in supplies for lean times; I have Mormons in the family.

What is new is the drumbeat of imminent doom running through feedback posts as readers digest the idea of Barack Obama in the White House.

"Hee hee heeeee ..." chortles "HG Robinson" in the very first post to reporter Peter Dujardin's story last week on the local run on weaponry.

"Clearly President Obama is looking to ban handguns and close loopholes in the law first chance he can. ... You gun nuts better stock up now."

First, Obama hasn't said he wants to ban handguns. And second, my own theory is that HG is a so-called gun nut, himself or herself, just priming the pump.

I have similar suspicions about a poster who signs off as "Tyrone" (really? Not Denzel or Tyrell or Sambo?) and taunts that he will "break into your house and rape you" and "Nobody should have guns but us thugs!"

Sure enough, some dupe bites.

"Bring it on Tyrone," growls a "mr white," "and you will be one DEAD African!!!!!"

Intelligent discourse, it's not — it's the pointless baiting and biting you get when a dog chases its own tail.

..... no one is afraid of this arab slaver precedent. He’s gonna be to busy watching his own six with the Clintonistas behind him. His greatest threat is now from within. Folks buying guns right now see em only as investments. Better investment than gold IMO. Won’t hurt that Obama’s plan for employment and the economy will cause the crime rate to skyrocket by folks just looking for food due their unemployment. The mere utility of a firearm is basic security, as it was yesterday, today and tomorrow.

Actually, if you can filter the condescending tone, it’s not a bad article. She’s identified the issues fairly close to accurately, maybe she’s gotten tripped up on the black/white part but she autocorrects later with a socialist/muslim/terrorist adjustment.

The plain fact is alot of you Yanks ARE buying guns this weekend. Alot of this purchasing IS driven by the Obama win. And alot of you ARE concerned that he is going to try to take your guns away. And alot of you ARE stocking up on ammo. And alot of you ARE expecting an increase in crime.

Audrey’s nailed all those facts to the post just fine. She thinks you’re crazy: that’s where she departs from your viewpoint.

To a Liberal all of this IS going to look like Y2K all over again, and it must be admitted that a few people did go a bit overboard with that, and yes that was Hell-Funny at the time...

You know I have stocked up on such supplies not necessarily because I think Obama will take them away, but more so because I have a distinct and acute feeling that the world is about to go to Hell in a hand basket. If it does, I do not want to be defenseless. Perhaps I am totally crazy, but like a good boy scout, I am prepared, and I continue to prepare. In all fairness, I also made certain purchases for such preparations with the thought in mind that I may not be able to make such purchases say next year. Hopefully none of this occurs, and I just end up well stocked for absolutely nothing.

The Boy Scout argument will always resonate true with me. If Boy Scouts ran the show, things like Obama and 9/11 couldn’t happen. These things DO happen thru want of preparation.

I agree. It’s hysterical. The largest stubborn anti-Second-Amendment organization in the Democrat Party is the Million Mom March, and the Republican Party has been trying to entice members of that group (feminists) while ignoring and driving away pro-family conservatives.

We’ll see as to how much effort Obama dedicates to “empowering” older feminists while trying to do as old Democrats did (with infrastructure make-work programs). He’ll have to choose between putting men to work and continuing unsustainable revenues to family-breaking programs, funding for enforcements of anti-Second-Amendment laws and other social rearrangement schemes.

IMO, he’ll be overwhelmed enough with trying to turn a deflationary economy into an inflationary one. And most Democrats also like to own firearms, BTW. If Obama and co. manage to turn the economy more toward inflation soon enough, firearms might actually become cheaper.

I’m a believer in stocking-up on necessities like food now, as shortages of some items might be more likely during the next year or two. There are the deflationary trend and possible resulting shrinkages of some commodity operations coupled with unforeseen disasters (natural and/or otherwise). Also, if a real war breaks out with certain nations, freight fuel could suddenly become rather expensive.

BTW, the NZ apples are good. :-)

You are aware that one of the biggest demographics for those buying “assult weapons” are doctors and lawyers. A demographic that is hardly what most consider part of the “redneck” demographic.

While reading your post I thought of an interview that an IBN reporter did with a German tourist in Mumbai during the terrorsiege. He said that he had wished he had a gun so he could have defended himself and the others. You better remember that one because it will come back to haunt those “enlightened countries” and “bleu nannystates” again and again. You see, terrorists are cowards and they go after those who are weak and can not defend themselves. That is why they have not gone after the US since 9/11 because they knew that President Bush would have them hunted down. They now know that it is once again open season on the world, America and Americans with the “messiah” and the Obamacrats because they know that the Obamacrats support them and and at worst might go whinging to the UN knowing full well that the UN won’t do jack except pickpocket our wallet.

That is also why these guys will pull other attacks like we saw in Mumbai this week and I can pretty much predict where they will occur. They will occur in places like Paris, London, Berlin, Toronto, Vancouver, Sydney, New York City, Seattle, San Francisco, New York City, Boston, Washington DC, etc.. Places that take pride in the fact that they have no way to defend themselves and would be jailed if they tried to do so. They won’t try it in places like Phoenix, Miami or Houston because they would not get very far with everyone packing heat, can hit what they shoot at and would rather enjoy punching that one way ticket to Allah for some fool jihadi.

They seem to be a bit more dense and durable than some of the premium apples here, but the NZ apples shipped to this area are quite delicious. ...might be among some of the better candidates for dehydrating and canning. Fruit isn’t produced here around the high peaks, AFAIK, so we’ll experiment with some of the lower-priced apples from various places.

...another note. We are rather accustomed to storing extra provisions, being at over 9,000 feet (> 3,000 meters elevation). The roads from the large cities do close, at times, and electric power does also fail for a day or two during some winter storms. Most neighbors here are also more helpful to any suffering personal misfortunes (donating food, providing small jobs,...even speaking for the incompetent but harmless, when they get themselves into a little trouble with the law). Most people here own firearms (bear overpopulation and the like) but are highly unlikely to threaten each other with them.
