Let the Guy Smoke: Obama Is Probably Fibbing About Giving Up Cigarettes. That's Okay.
The Washington Post ^ | November 20, 2008 | Michael Kinsley

It is still okay to discriminate against one group of Americans. This discrimination is not only legal, it is encouraged. You see members of this oppressed minority huddled outside in rain and snow, forbidden to seek refuge. No one feels sorry for them. And yet we may have just elected one of these pariahs as president.

Smoking is a disgusting habit that can kill you and those around you. Barack Obama claims to have quit, but the evidence is ambiguous. And the media's lack of interest in this question supports the charge that Obama is enjoying a honeymoon with the press. Compare the attention given to John McCain's melanoma -- a health problem more likely than smoking to kill him in the next four years, but also a problem beyond his control. Smoking, by contrast, is behavior. It sets a deplorable example for young people, millions of whom Obama has inspired into active citizenship.

Obama has never denied that he was a smoker for much of his adult life. He said as early as February 2007 that he had promised his wife he would quit in order to run for president. He also admitted as recently as this June -- when his presidential campaign was about three-quarters over -- that he hadn't done so. In May the Obama campaign released a carefully worded letter from his doctor, who wrote that Obama's "own history included intermittent cigarette smoking. He has quit this practice on several occasions and is currently using Nicorette gum with success." Obama has declined to amplify.

He’ll need his cigarettes ... and his coffee and Wild Turkey (or whatever he drinks) over the next 4 years. Something to prop him up as he agonizes over the decisions. He’s woefully unprepared for what will besiege him.

Would Kinsley have been so understanding if W had started having a Jack on the rocks once or twice a day?

Judging from Obama’s frazzled mind on the campaign trail, he needs a bump of cocaine to keep him going too.

There was a thread on this awhile back, with pics of BO with a cigarette dangling out of his mouth. Illinois has really stringent no smoking laws. I was wondering what the law is in Washington DC. Will they have to set up one of those white tents in the Rose Garden so BO can go outside when he needs a ciggie?

So sad that the new “leader” of the “free” world doesn’t have the character or intestinal fortitude to quit.

The problem with this statement is all the people who had character and intestinal fortitude in the last century were smokers: Churchill, FDR, Einstein, Oppenheimer, Reagan, etc.

Who were the non-smokers? Stalin, Hitler, Mao Tse Tung, etc.

I don’t give a damn if he smokes. But I do object to hypocrites and liars who smoke themselves but pass laws to stop other people from smoking.

Smoking is a disgusting habit that can kill you and those around you.

The current 'cure'; Big Government tyrants forcing people NOT to smoke at the point of a gun is far more dangerous.

Left unchecked they will kill far more people including those near and dear to you than smoking ever has, or ever will.

The score for these tyrants is 100,000,000+ deaths for the last century alone.

Smoking doesn't hold a candle to that.

Hell no. He will put his feet up on the desk in the oval office and light up. Who is going to stop him.

And those duplicitous bastards who call for bankrupting coal companies because "they pollute the atmosphere" yet smokers also pollute...

Let the Guy Smoke

Wasn't there a comedian who said that in California, lighting up to smoke in someone's house is practically equivalent to urinating on the hosts children. Aaaaaagh! Obama is urinating on your children!

except for the fact that I have to smell it. I HATE the smell - it’s toxic. It doesn’t just affect the smoker - it seeps into cars and buildings and hangs on hair and clothes and permeates the area that non-smokers have to breathe - HAVE TO BREATHE. I HATE IT.

I think you hate it. What about other invasions of the senses? I've seen people engaged in behaviors (certain eating behavior is a common one, but there are others) so ugly I could vomit. I've heard people speak with a voice that makes me want to strangle them.

And as for smell, well, I think we've all encountered the individual who through sheer will of presence, invades your olfactory senses to the point of nausea.

Your point is taken. But I think most smokers now are fairly considerate. Essentially, we can only smoke outside, so I think there's room for accommodation.

I can’t give you a source at the moment, but that number has been documented many, many times in recent years right here on FR. Including how many died under each Leftist’s rule.

To anyone who is paying attention, the smoking bans are clear paths to that same end, and unless they are stopped, our children, our grandchildren will die at their hands.

Even if they don’t smoke.

History has proven that well beyond any reasonable doubt.

But I want him to smoke lots, inhale deeply, cut those filters out and throw them away. Have a cigar, have a pipe, smoke a joint, smoke, smoke, smoke.
