Roots of Defeat: Let us study, and emulate, the Left’s online tactics
National Review Online -- NR/Digital ^ | Nov. 24, 2008 | Patrick Ruffini

Posted on 11/25/2008 7:54:07 AM PST by Al B.

The four-year ascent of Barack Obama from state senator to president marks not just the triumph of a man, but the coming of age of a movement.

That movement belongs to liberal (or “progressive”) Democrats, who in less than a decade have remade themselves. Once respected only in academia and the news media, they have become a fighting force. They systemically digitized the means of political organization and strategy, with the ultimate goal of dominating the political system — “Crush their spirits!” was Daily Kos blogger Markos Moulitsas Zuniga’s pre-election rallying cry.

The Left’s online movement is consciously modeled after the Goldwater-and-Reagan-era conservative movement. To those trying to build the Left, the vast right-wing conspiracy was an object not of scorn, but of admiration. They studied the Right’s network of think tanks, issue groups, and talk-show hosts, looking for clues on how to push a message with brutal efficiency. They took these lessons to heart and shaped them to fit the web. Ironically, today’s Right has much to learn from them.

The Left has created not just a collection of unshaven bloggers but a machine that beat the Right at its own game.

uh... no mention of generations of communist brainwashing in the public education system and the blatant bias of the media...

...how to push a message with brutal efficiency...

The big lie, told often enough, is eventually accepted as truth.

the key ingredient is enthusiasm. It cannot be manufactured. It has to be felt.

The netroots’ early successes were achieved over the opposition of the party establishment and with little support from major donors. But the Democratic fundraising clearinghouse ActBlue changed the game: Any donor could earmark money for specific candidates, and could do so online. The site has now raised nearly $82 million for Democratic candidates, most of them liberal.

Money talks - even for bloggers...

The author misses the cause-and-effect. Controlling the education of our youth, AND the outlet by with the masses get their information, the left has brainwashed a generation.

My enemies cannot crush my spirit. Unfortunately my "friends" in the Republican party did that already with a multiyear spending spree that even had drunken sailors telling them to calm down with the checkbook.

The left faces an insurmoutable hurdle to building a counterculture network which will broadcast their unheard message - you can't rebel against yourself. They own the culture, the message, the networks, the music, the television, the movies, the news divisions, the wire services, etc.

It's difficult for the right to study the left and learn tactics when we're playing a completely different game on an upside down field.

As the article notes though, the left can mimic the right to encroach upon and absorb the few little arenas they've overlooked. The Fairness Doctrine will mop up the last stragglers.

Ditto. If I have to become a monster to “beat” the liberals, forget it. Socialists end up beating themselves when they have a little stint of total power. Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely someone once said. Apparently that goes for so-called conservative Republicans as well. People seem to have to have a dose of the liberal/socialists every once in a while to remind them of what they don’t like about them.

Obama was affirmative action taken to the next level.

I have to agree with everyone else here that brings up the leftists’ control of both education and most media, print and otherwise, as the real reason for their success.

The only way to fix this problem is to encourage conservatives to go into those professions.

So true, Jim. And WE must be louder and speak the truth often enough that it becomes clear, and the lies on the left get exposed. We have been silent and tolerant far too long. No person who loves freedom should ever tolerate the intolerable. Refute it, debate it, point out it's flaws and serious dangers.

The truth will win out, but only if enough people are voicing it. And we must before it is outlawed.

Interesting how much intellectuals have molded the minds of the next generation.

They have tremendous power and are generally underestimated by conservatives.

Exactly. That's why they are so intent on getting “the youth vote”. Before they start working and paying taxes, living in reality long enough for half of them, at least, to see the lies for what they are.

"The Left has created not just a collection of unshaven bloggers but a machine that beat the Right at its own game. "

The secret there is to NOT PLAY GAMES. Get on message, and beat that drum. Stick to the Constitution...it's worked pretty well for all these years into building this into the most powerful nation in the history of the world.

If the right REALLY believes in conservatism, freedom, and individual rights, then it is indefensible.

The advice given to the left by hollywood a$$hole Alex Baldwin was to "laugh at them". How totally infantile, and from hearing some of his other rants, including the terrorizing of his own daughter, he is not much to talk about laughing at someone.

It just about comes down to the fact that we must remain the "ADULTS" and treat the left "THE KIDS" according to their behavior.

Everyone is writing "what happened" columns about the GOP...and some of their stuff is true, but mostly this election lost to early voting, absentee voting, dead people voting, and ACORN. There are too many pointers in those directions to logically believe otherwise.

To me, that doesn't mean an overhaul of the Republican Party (although it needs some tweaking), it means an overhaul is needed for the AMERICAN ELECTION PROCESS.

That is the only "game" they beat us at...and they only did that because we believe in honesty and doing it right to let the best man win...it's the American way. They believe in cheating and doing whatever it takes to win.

The irony is, the left is the party that wanted to get rid of "scoreboards" in school sports so the losers wouldn't "feel bad".

But over the years I have listed to the left, and I have watched the left, and friends, THEIR WALK DON'T MATCH THEIR TALK.

The key ingredient is to actually BE (or become) conservative; our so “called leaders” even in the conservative media generally do NOT represent the grass-roots of the Republican Party (or conservative-libertarian) individualists.

Conservatism will ALWAYS be vilified as a political alternative in America as long as the children in this country are captives to our ‘educational' system. By the time they are voting age, we cannot properly de program future generations of the Liberal mindset which ‘teachers’ and ‘textbooks’ have established.

No matter what else is done, if this is allowed to continue, Conservatism will eventually die in America. Period.

Yes, we do need more conservatives in the educational and media professions, but that means sending young people to liberal institutions where they will have a difficult time holding onto their principles and getting good grades. We need, somehow and I don’t know how, to establish conservative institutions and let them train our children.

A good start would be to let all the donors know how their University rates, kind of a conservative vs liberal rating. So many people don’t realize their money is being used to brain wash students against the very things that make the donors able to fund the Universities.

And a message that anybody can define for him/herself.

If you ask 100 Obama voters what hope and change meant to them, I bet you’d get 100 different answers.

“Interesting how much intellectuals have molded the minds of the next generation.”

Just as in this past election, the voters used the ballots to plunder and it’s going to get worse when the voters don’t get instant gratification. Some US Citizens have been convinced that they are entitled to anothers’ property (income) and talents (health care, for example) and that they can use the force of the US Government to provide for their own needs.

“They have tremendous power and are generally underestimated by conservatives.”
Quite a few ‘conservatives’ don’t know the difference between a ‘liberal’ and a ‘progressive’. They honestly still believe that the ‘dark side’ of communism wouldn’t flourish in the US today. (Since they think it was ‘defeated’.)

Exactly, part of the problem was McCain took two months off while Obamao campaigned against Hilde and organized ACORN behind the scenes.

As for the Koyz Kids, keep in mind Obamao jettisoned the majority of of the issues he used to fundraise among the Koyz Kidz, they provide cash, and little else.

Oh they sputtered when Lieberman was retained, but other then that...nothing..add in Bush Derangement Syndrome and they Dhimmis were preaching to the choir, let’s see what two years of Dhimmicrat complete control brings to the Koyz Types...
