Mormon aid to Prop. 8 investigated (Gestapo)
SFGate ^ | 11/24/08 | na

California officials are planning to investigate whether the Mormon church gave an accurate accounting of its role in the campaign that succeeded in getting a same-sex marriage ban approved in the state.

The action by the California Fair Political Practices Commission came in response to a complaint filed two weeks ago by a gay rights activist. Fred Karger, founder of Californians Against Hate, accuses the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints of failing to report the value of the work it did to support Proposition 8. Roman Porter, the agency's executive director, said Monday that the decision to open an investigation does not mean staff members have determined there was any wrongdoing, only that Karger's complaint merits further inquiry.

A representative from the Salt Lake City-based church could not be reached for comment.

Now tell us the parts you left out that make these teachings possible.

The parts left out show that your conclusions are wrong.

How about you also really study this Church's teaching and report back as to why what you say is wrong.

I was simply trying to discuss the reason WHY such action might have occured.

Mormons go around tooting their own horn regarding their “good works,” yet when someone tries to point out the fact that while Mormons indeed contributed to the success of Proposition 8, they weren’t the only ones, and this work doesn’t “earn” them anything. Isn’t this a “work” they should be doing in humility? Is THAT a valid point?

To what aim do they use FR and sites like this to heighten their standing in the community and use it as a proselyting opportunity? Is that question too hard to examine on the News/Activism forum?

The news forum is not the place for discussions of religious doctrine unless that doctrine is specifically mentioned in the posted article. I am removing posts on this thread that delve into such - those belong on the Religion Forum.

The post has been removed. We are not permitted to discuss Mormon theology on this thread.

Thank you.

You have AMPLE opportunities to discuss such in the Religion forum and posted news articles that specifically raise that question (and there was one such posted in the News forum that had extensive doctrinal discussions). However, a lot of people are interested in the more broad subject of backlash against Prop 8 backers and do not wish to see threads about such continually degrade into re-runs of the exchanges between the two usual subgroups on FR regarding this subject.

In the case of Prop 8, there are many divergent groups of people who have been and are supporting Prop 8 and the Mormons.

If you are upset with what you label “tooting their own horns” from the Mormons with regards to their extensive work on Prop 8, why have you not also spent equal time attacking the other groups who also have “tooted their horns” in support of Prop 8?

Within the context of this news forum, your focused attacks on the Mormons’ beliefs makes a substantial case that this is not so much about your being against the Mormons’ theology as it is that you are supportive of and sanctioning gay marriage.

This thread is about intimidation against groups involved in political activism.

Hmmmm....a shame that there is intimidation against groups on FR.

the mods have said in a previous thread that pings that clearly are an attempt to draw posters into any News forum Mormon-related Prop 8 thread for an attempt to hijack the thread into a discussion of Mormon doctine "will not stay up"

First, "the mods" decide ahead of time what certain posters WILL say, THEN a simple ping is treated as a threat.

I would like an example of when ANY group of posters on FreeRepublic has been disciplined in this manner.....BEFORE they even open their cyber mouths.

Evidently "change" is coming to FR along the lines of the examples given by the Obama campaign in effectively shutting down any criticism of the promised one.

Take it to the Religion forum. The text of your ping post made it clear that you were planning to call in people to turn the thread into a discussion of Mormonism. If you find it too confining that FR moderators will not allow repeated thread hijacks, then please feel free to freepmail Jim to lift such. And if you consider enforcement of basic FR rules regarding thread hijacks to be the moral equivalent of what liberals are doing to supporters of Prop 8, I really can’t help you there...

Can't readily recall such, but, then again, we seldom see a group of posters so determined to hijack threads on the slightest pretext.

Agreed, Colofornian. I'd rather spend a week alone on a desert island with Barney Frank than a Mitt Romney

Frank is an immoral pervert. I wouldn't spend two seconds with him.

For starters, Temple recommends are routinely taken for turning down callings. You know as well as I it is one of the questions on the recommend interview.

Routinely? Umm... no. At least not for any of the Bishops with whom I've worked. Perhaps it should be, but I've not seen it.

And, more to the point, that's a potential consequence, but it's not force.

No temple recommend, no going to the temple. No going to the temple, no going to heaven, according to Joe Sith. if that isn't punishment, I don't know what is !!

"Joe Sith" ??? So he's buddies with Darth Vader now?

Nice attempt at spin, but it won't get past me.

I think you missed the entire point of the original post. The author wasn't talking about how callings are made, or whether you're expected to accept them, etc.. The context of the term "volunteer" was used in contrast to a paid, professional clergy. LDS leadership, teachers and other staff are all "volunteers" in the sense that they are not paid.

Ok, let me get this correct you are deleting pings because of what people might say not what they actually said but what they might say?
Is this correct, because of what they might say?
Wow, it is truly amazing that the ldsers have such power to know what people might say not what they actually said.

No, just acting on the long, long history of certain posters. Now, I've got better things to do than explain the obvious to the deliberately obtuse, so enough of this subject.

I have no love of the Mormon theology, but this is a witch hunt. Today we are all Mormon

As most long term posters know, I am a strong critic of Mormon theology and of the Mormon Heirarchy. But on this issue I stand side by side with Mormons in their fight against the forces of evil and against the Homosexual lobby and the movement of political correctness.

When Mormons are attacked and their churches are attacked and picketed and they are personally subject to vicious assaults and then the forces of the Government are lined against them, then at those times....

"Ich Bin Ein Mormon"

Now where do you get that?
Just because evangelicals aren’t screaming “look at me look at me” does not mean they were not involved.
