Winnetka, IL Repeals Draconian Handgun Ban Becomes Third Chicago Suburb to Drop Total Ban Since Supreme Court Ruling

Thursday, November 20, 2008

Fairfax, VA-The Winnetka, IL Village Council has repealed its 20-year handgun ban following this summer's Supreme Court decision and subsequent lawsuit by NRA and three Winnetka residents. The village council voted unanimously to strike portions of its firearm restrictions raised by NRA lawyers in September of this year in U.S. District Court.

"This decision to repeal the Winnetka Village handgun ban marks another great victory for NRA members and firearm owners in Illinois," said Chris W. Cox, NRA's chief lobbyist. "This summer, our country's Supreme Court ruled in District of Columbia v. Heller that the Second Amendment right is exercised individually and belongs to all Americans. It is time this constitutionally protected civil right be returned to the residents of Winnetka Village."

The Winnetka Village Council's decision to repeal its handgun ban follows similar complete repeals by the councils of two other Chicago suburbs: Wilmette and Morton Grove. Evanston passed a partial repeal by allowing handguns in the home, but NRA’s lawsuit against it continues since the remaining ban prohibits possession of a handgun at any other place, including transportation of a handgun to one’s home.

"This victory in Winnetka is not the end for NRA's fight to bring the Second Amendment to lawful residents across America. We will continue with lawsuits in any area of the country that denies the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding Americans in defiance of the Supreme Court's ruling."

-NRA-

Established in 1871, the National Rifle Association is America's oldest civil rights and sportsmen's group. Nearly four million members strong, NRA continues its mission to uphold Second Amendment rights and to advocate enforcement of existing laws against violent offenders to reduce crime. The Association remains the nation's leader in firearm education and training for law-abiding gun owners, law enforcement and the military.

Very glad to hear it. I used to live in Oak Park and still have the exwife’s relatives there. I can’t wait for Oak Park to be sued into oblivion. The Mayor said he didn’t care how much it cost, he was going to fight the NRA[using taxpayer money, of course].

Thank you NRA.

goa = AWOL

I think rather than have a federal court declare the law invalid, they repealed it so that they could show who was still in power.

All very interesting to me, because I grew up in Highland Park way back in the 60s and this controversy was non-existent then/

Well..I wouldn’t shovel dirt on the GOA S2.5, granted the NRA is much more active, and more effective, but the GOA has it’s members as well.

I’m an NRA member, like GOA and JPFO...but..

Gun Owners of America run by Larry Pratt is very good, they don’t have the money the NRA has.

Then you’re wasting your money with the goa. They simply don’t do anything. The Second Amendment Foundation joined with the NRA to sue Winnetka, Chicago and San Francisco. The SAF also joined with the NRA to sue on behalf for the Katrina victims. The goa was AWOL from that too. The goa didn’t do anything to further anyone’s rights for the Katrina victims. The goa simply handed over a revolver to the lady who had her arm broken.

The Second Amendent Foundation is almost off the radar and they still have the time to help the NRA in cooperation. The poor excuse the goa isn’t as big as the NRA isn’t correct. The goa is bigger than the SAF.

For more than a year, the goa thought they could criticize the NRA for nonsense so the NRA members would quit and join the goa. That tactic worked for a while but it weakened both groups. I’m criticizing the goa because they never do anything. Never. There is not a single thing they have ever done on their own to further gun rights. Not like the Citizen’s Committee or the SAF.

JPFO doesn’t lobby either but then again they aren’t a lobbying group. At least they stay within their tax status.

Why should a politician be worried about how much anything costs?

Remember, the Taxpayer is just an abstract notion, a person with unlimited wealth and capacity to pay more taxes.

Indeed, however if we look at Heller v DC, the NRA did not want that case moving forward in the court system, at the time they thought it was to much of a risk.

Things like that are a part of the reason why other groups exist Shooter 2.5, there is minority that will not support the NRA, but will support other organizations.

For myself, I understand why the NRA tries to mitigate the legislation that will pass, some folks, do not.

The NRA knew we were going to lose with the Supreme Court stacked against us. Remember, it was five years ago when Robert Levy started the case. Since Levy never even owned a gun, he had nothing to lose. Again, remember, Robert Levy is also on record for believing employers can tell you what you can carry in your personal vehicle and be fired no matter how many years you have on the job. The employees in question never had the opportunity to know about the policy change or the fact the employers can search their cars.

It was pure luck that President Bush was able to give us Roberts and Alito who are staunch Second Amendment supporters in the meantime.

Four Supreme Court Justices on the bench right this second have no idea how to read a twenty seven word sentence.

Four Supreme Court Justices on the bench right now don’t have the reading skills of a sixth grader.

As opposed to the NRA who actively opposed and tried to sabotage Heller.....

“The NRA knew that we were..”

And therein lays the problem, they merely thought they knew, in fact, they filed a lawsuit and attempted to co-opt Levy’s lawsuit into theirs and quash the whole attempt.

Believe it or not, people pay attention to things such as that, Levy is a Libertarian as I recall, he chose a very clever strategy, one he co-opted from Thurgood Marshal’s lawsuits in the 40’s and 50’s, the NRA would never try to make the attempt.

Not that I hold that against the NRA mind you, these other folks can skate around and try different sorts of things, the NRA is goaltender at the Legislative level, if it goes by them, there is nothing the JPFO,GOA,SAF can do if the NRA fails.

The Second Amendment does a better job in their sleep compared to the goa. they actually helped the Katrina victims get their own guns back. The Second Amendment Sisters at least offer free shooting classes. Next time you defend the do nothing goa, try to find something they really did on their own to suport the Second Amendment.
