Nov 20, 2008 7:13 pm US/Central Obama Advisers To Public: Temper Expectations
Reporting: Mike Flannery
CHICAGO (CBS) ― President-elect Barack Obama and his inner circle fear that some voters expect him to turn around the economy, wind down the war in Iraq and, perhaps, cure cancer -- all by the Fourth of July.
They know they must manage and lower those expectations, CBS 2 Political Editor Mike Flannery reports.
A top economic advisor to Obama had a glum warning for the rest of us Thursday morning: Neither the job market nor the stock market will be turning around any time soon.
"This might be a long haul," said Robert Reich, who was President Bill Clinton's secretary of labor. "2009 is going to be a very hard year. Some economists say we won't be out of this for two years, others are saying it may be three, or four, maybe five years."
Now on Obama's transition team, Reich worries about what happens after the new president is sworn in Jan. 20.
"We all have to be very careful about the expectations that we are putting on this man, our president-elect," Reich said. "If we all assume it's going to be the first 100 days, we're going to be disappointed."
The man who was Obama's chief campaign strategist is moving to lower expectations, too.
"We are inheriting an array problems unlike any president has faced, maybe since Franklin Roosevelt in 1932," David Axelrod said. "It's not gonna be easy, not gonna be quick."
Rick Jasculca worked for President Jimmy Carter, President Clinton and Sen. Hillary Clinton. He said Obama will need every bit of his skill as a communicator.
"If people see you reaching across the aisle and they see you making progress -- going forward rather than going backward -- I think people will give you the benefit of the doubt," Jasculca said.
Added Axelrod: "One of his great strengths is he is never too high, he's never too low -- he's very focused."
In their hearts of hearts, the liberals already know this, but are clinging to an unrealistic, and faraway dream.
These are the people who banished all reality from their minds in order to wish upon a star.
They should have spent some time talking to former members of the Hitler Youth. Maybe then, they would have gotten a clue.
Sad, but true.
The false messiah has hornswoggled millions of latter day heathens.
Huh? Obama is a Socialist. Not a single one has ever fixed an economy, anywhere on earth. No amount of terms in office can help him do that, so long as he adheres to that failed philosophy.
Gee, I thought he told everyone in his campaign just that and that he was going to take care of everyone’s bills, etc.
Hell hath no fury like a government dependent voter scorned.
Ok, I'm laughing too hard on that one to comment!
There ya go.
I want my big screen TV and my mortgage paid, Lord Obama! And while you're at it, how 'bout paying off my truck and my back loans to the payday folks?
Maybe even pay up my front rent? How 'bout it, oh Omnipotent One?
Sheeeesh......
Haven't you heard, Pew took a poll, and established that a majority of Americans are willing to put their middle class tax cuts on hold until the Messiah can straighten out the economy. You wouldn't want the Prez-elect to go against the will of the American people, would you? But never fear, the Tax increases on the wealthy will go into effect as soon as the new Administration readjusts the defintion of "wealthy" - downward.
Yeah!! BO, you’re tanking the economy!! ...and he’s not even in office yet. My goodness, we have a lot of confidence in what’s coming.
WHAAAAT???
Hold the phone, Edith!
You mean to tell me that I actually voted for the putz that was going to make me actually WORK for a living???
Aaarrrrrgggggghhhhh!!!
Ya see? The sheeples haven't changed a bit.
Surprise, surprise. The Obamatons turn out to be Clintonoids. That’s probably a good thing. We really didn’t want to see Secretary of Education Ayers or the Fruit of Islam taking over from the Secret Service.
I thought he was going to CHANGE THE WORLD!!!
Gee...what a surprise. After the leftists chipping away at America and everything that has made this country great for over half a century, one would think we’d be going stronger and better than ever. (/endsarc)
We’re being defeated by the enemy within.
I don’t understand. If the economy is so bad, why am I experiencing a flood of new web design clients?
I know, I know. They love my work!
In other words—no we can’t and no, we won’t. LOL for all of the lame brained fools that voted for him.
The cries are already in the works. Jamie Dupree was telling Boortz yesterday to expect the MSM stories coming soon about Obama’s promises for bring change to Washington. It seems the constant list of retreads from the past tagged for top positions in the next administration are not squaring with his promises.
News flash to RNC. Use the video clips of his promoses of change in well placed and timed contrast ads to bring a dose of reality to the fawming dupes in this country. No large scale buys, just real strategic targets where lilberals and the average Joe’s get their news and information. All it takes are a few well placed items to sound like public service notices and the water cooler fodder starts.

If you believe that obamma lamma ding dong is going to fight for a middle class tax cut you need to see a shrink.
1st he and his lib pals are not going to continue Bush’s tax cuts which in effect will be the largest tax increase of all time. “Not a tax increase, just the expiration of an earlier bill”.
Then there will be many more tax increases to fund his give aways to the “less fortunate”.
Way to go, America you bought the hype and now you are going to get it...real hard!
“We want pie! We want pie!”
