A week or so ago I sold a bunch of rifles and pistols in my local Missouri paper.
Included in the list of rifles was an SKS which was in nice condition .of which I still have a pretty big pile of ammo in the closet. (7.62x39)
My intention was to sell all these guns and buy a Ruger Mini 30.
Now, I have read a lot of the internet chatter bad talking the Mini 14s and Mini 30s and I also know that Ruger in recent years has tightened the specs of these rifles and I am hoping that their performance has been improved .. so I am prepared for some bad-mouthing
HEREs the problem: I cannot find a Mini 30 in the entire Country.
WalMart has them in the book that they can order from but .Out Of Stock and no telling when they get them back in stock .[WalMart still get the occasional Mini 14 . It seems easier to get a Mini 14]
Bass Pro also cannot get the Mini 30
I have Called Ruger in Connecticut and they say they are producing the Mini 30s . and that I might check with their Biggest Distributor Davidsons (in AZ?) .. of which I have not made contact with yet.
So ------ what does a guy have to do to get a Mini 30? Prices are shooting up daily! 2 weeks ago WalMart would sell a Mini 30 for $630 . Now - $699. BassPro is at $711. The moon is the limit!!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!
I have checked J&Gsales.com
I have checked Impact Arms (Utah) and they said a 30 day wait .. that particular answer was the clearest most direct answer I have yet received ..
So now I wonder ..Maybe I should buy a Mini 14 and just leave it in the box and then re-sell it if and when I find a Mini 30.???? Good idea??
Somebody is wondering .??Why a Mini 30 instead of a Mini 14??? ANSWER: I can deer hunt with a Mini 30 and I have a ton of 7.62x39 ammo.
.so sorry for this rambling post.
His new Mini-30 works great for deer hunting.
I’ve owned Mini-14s and Mini-30s.
After those I tried and bought an AR-15. The AR-15 is BY FAR more superior. You can buy an AR chambered for 7.62x39. Since you have a surplus of that ammo, that would be a great choice.
I would ONLY choose a Ruger Mini over an AR if cost were a real concern, or legality within your state.

Any rifle that can hold a high cap magazine is selling well these days. You can get an AR-15 lower receiver and a 7.62X39 upper from J&T Distributing and build one, but you need special mags. All you really have to do is assemble the lower, I did the first one in an hour, the second in 15 minutes. Videos on Brownells.
Also Google "Ruger Mini-30, Guns America." You should be able to find at least a few.
Go on the web and search “Missouri gun shows”. I am positive there will be more shows before the year is over within 100 miles or so of where you live.
You have to be realistic right now. It is now becoming nearly impossible to buy AR-15’s, Colts and the multitude of clones, because they are flying off the shelves faster than they are being built. Gun dealers cannot get prompt shipping of those rifles from distributors or manufacturers. The demand has completely outstripped the supply for the near-term. The back-log for new such rifles is now stretched out to many MONTHS.
PS: My favorite semi auto rifle is an HK-91 clone with a PSG1 trigger group.
I have one, and it’s awesome! It’s scary accurate, and the selectable 2.5 lb trigger pull is very nice. What’s crazy is the PSG1 trigger pack cost more than the rest of the gun.
It looks as though you can get an AR for about the same as a Mini 30. I bought a lower receiver for $150 and a kit from J&T Distributing for $479.
I’ve purchased hard to get guns from Davidson’s. In a week they tracked down what I wanted and shipped it to my local FFL dealer overnight.
My mini-14 is the most reliable of all the semi-autos I have and I have lots of em including an Rock River M4 and an AK-47.
Always check Gun Broker. With them you have to have it shipped to an FFL gun shop or Pawn shop or FFL club and pay a humble fee.
Buy an SKS its 100% guaranteed to go bang.
Holy sh1t!!! I was planning on buying a couple at the first of the year. I guess I should get the shop to order now! 30 Round magazines are also something to buy. Also don't forget the 15 round pistol mags...... DAMN! So much stuff to buy....so little time.... Geez! Don't forget bulk ammo!
Great suggestion! I was just about to mention that for those having trouble buying ARs. You can get a stripped lower receiver for a little over $100, and that's just like purchasing an entire 'pre-ban' rifle because it has the all important serial number. Buying 6 stripped lowers is just like buying 6 full rifles as far as the government is concerned.
You could be putting the cart in front of the horse, buying a rifle simply because you have ammunition for it seems odd.
Why not a Ak that you tart up with a trigger group and extended mag release from www.redstararms.com?
Should be about 200 bucks less magazines are still plentiful and fairly cheap...
I like my Mini-30. The off market big clips have some difficulty inserting.
The 10 round and factory mags are pretty good.
Not as accurate as a bushmaster but the Mini 30 is a lot of fun. I like it.
Does anyone have an opinion on the Armalite AR-180B? Seems like a reasonably priced option compared to the AR-15.
This should be an interesting thread as I have in my possession a stainless steel Ruger Mini-30 for the past say 12-13 years that I haven’t had the opportunity, or shall I say TAKEN the opportunity to go out and shoot. Recently with all the hullaballoo going on with the gun grabber elect, I’m concerned about building my stock of ammo.
I noticed the main gun store in town, at least the one I’m familiar with (Turner Outdoor) that I bought the rifle from is gone now. I read the other day that I can buy my 7.62 X 39 at Wal-Mart over in Corona. We’ve never shopped there. I s’pose it’s like any other store, or is it something one must pay a fee to join?
The last gunshow I attended had SKS’s on the tables for 350 dollars.
