A Slidell man shot and killed his neighbor's two pit bulls after they attacked him and his dog Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.
The man was in his home on Maris Stella Street about 1 p.m. when he saw the pit bulls enter his yard and attack his dog, Slidell Police Lt. Ray Dupuy said on the scene. The man's dog appeared to be a Labrador-Rottweiler mix, Dupuy said.
The man rushed in to protect his dog, at which point the pit bulls turned on him, Dupuy said. The resident then went inside and got a handgun, shooting both dogs when they tried to attack him a second time, the officer said.
A neighbor called police after hearing the shots. The shooter's dog was taken to an animal hospital for treatment, and its condition is unknown, Dupuy said.
Police did not plan on citing the shooter, who police determined was acting in self-defense, Dupuy said. The city's Animal Services Department would have to determine whether the owner of the pit bulls should be cited for failure to confine his animals, Dupuy said.
It was unclear how the dogs escaped from the yard, which is surrounded by a tall wooden fence that is posted with "Beware of Dog" signs.
Authorities on the scene declined to name the dogs or their owner. The man who was attacked declined to comment on the scene Tuesday.

Irresponsible pitbull owners who cannot control their own dangerous property should be sued into oblivion. And then jailed.
Uh...
Dogs gone.
Yep, I would of done the same thing.
dogs of peace alert
Seems reasonable to me.
The only good pit bull is a dead pit bull!
Flame on pit lovers....

Well, Silly. Everyone knows that dogs can’t READ! ;)
I hope this mans dog survives. I hate people with ill-mannered dogs. Granted, mine aren’t paragons of virtue, but with my mutts (Lab & Bassett) you might get a muddy paw print on you, or get “kissed” to death. :)
Shooting Pit Bulls is a form of urban Varmint Control that needs to happen more often.

Irresponsible DOG owners...... :)
Amazes me the guy didn’t actually come out with the gun in the first place. Could have been killed. I see strange, dangerous dogs attacking my dog in my yard I’m coming out with the 12Ga blasting.
I’ve had times where talking to a pack of dogs saved my wifes and my life.Came across a Pitt once that was so high strung that you just had to shoot him,his owner was with me so that did not happen. Those dogs are very particular, say “Hey boy”,if that doesn’t work, shoot, four or five times.Period
And rural as well.
Amen.
Why cant we ban Pitbulls from being sold or bought?
I cant buy an Uzi or a rocket launcher. I can only buy certain guns. Pets should be the same way.
Most people who buy pitbulls are the type that want to look tough and scary and are not very disciplined themselves. There is no way they can train a pitbull. They can’t even control their own kids.
Where I live in california as I drive to downtown L.A. to work, I drive through some very rough areas to avoid the freeway. You sometimes see these gang thug types walking two of these pitbulls at a time. Sometimes it looks like these dogs are just dragging the owner whom barely handles the dogs.
Every pit i see in this area has its ears clipped and have fight scars. I’ve heard of underground fighting and some of these dogs are pumped with steroids.
I’ve seen pits around here that have a head the size of a lion.
If we need to buy permits and wait a few days for a gun.
People buying pitbulls should be required to undergo a backround check and some dog training.
I have no idea WTF is wrong with "some" Pit Bull owners. It's like a religion.
Gotta defend yourself and your dog. I would’ve done what he did.
Fact is, if he’s like me, he probably was much more pissed at his irresponsible neighbor - the REAL source of teh problem in the first place.
I say, God Bless this one.
