Indian navy sinks pirate “mother ship” in Gulf of Aden

Late Tuesday, Nov. 18, after a Thai boat and Iranian cargo vessel were hijacked, the Indian navy’s Tabar stealth frigate fought back and destroyed a pirate ship in the Gulf of Aden.

It was described by the Indian navy as a mother vessel loaded with food, diesel and water, with two speed boats in tow. On the deck, were rocket-propelled grenade launchers and guns. The pirates threatened to blow up the Indian warship then opened fire. After destroying the pirate ship, the Tabar chased one of the speed boats, which was later found abandoned.

The US 5th fleet spokesman and the International Maritime Bureau said it had no reports on the incident. The attack took place 285 nautical miles southwest off Salalah, Oman.

Counter-terror sources report that this area is well off the Somali pirates’ beaten track and cause of concern on another score, their proximity to the Strait of Hormuz – unless the vessel hit by the Indian frigate belonged to a different pirate gang or arms smugglers.

The Indian navy says it was the third attack the Indian warship had repelled since its anti-piracy mission began in the Gulf of Aden on Nov. 2. On Nov. 11, Indian naval commandos flying a helicopter foiled an attempt to hijack an Indian merchant ship.

Glad to see that there are some others (India) in this world willing to do the right thing and take out the garbage.

It’s so funny, as though it is some difficult task for a modern navy to deal with these ‘pirates’. What a joke. They are sitting ducks, out in the middle of the ocean, no one is around with a TV camera, just blast their asses into the drink.

Didn’t know India had a Navy...but they will curry favor with the US if they can help kill a few of these Islamo Fascists.

Exactly, these pirates should be used as live targets for war games and maneuvers.

One of very few Navies that operates aircraft carriers. They fly the Harrier, but in the past they've flown conventional take off jets from their carriers as well.

With a Mark 48 torpedo from a nuclear attack sub, it wouldn't matter if TV cameras were around or not. One minute, the pirates' ship is floating merrily along. The next minute, the ship goes bye-bye in the blink of an eye. :=)

Very cool. I hope it doesn’t read as racist as it sounds in my head, but I really don’t think of them as that sophisticated, even though I run into a lot of Indian engineers (and in fact work closely with one) who are smart as hell. My wife hates their misogyny and I have seen it, but for the most part I guess I really do not know that much about their culture and structures. Do they have nuclear subs?
