Gingrich says Palin will not be the future GOP leader

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) is batting down the hype that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin heads into 2012 as the frontrunner for the GOP presidential nomination.

Palin energized the Republican base after GOP presidential nominee Sen. John McCain (Ariz.) tapped her as his running mate and she has tried to preserve her high public profile since Election Day.

But Gingrich, an architect of the Republican revolution of 1994, took Palin down a notch, asserting that she would not become the party’s leader, as some have predicted.

“I think that she is going to be a significant player,” said Gingrich during an interview on CBS’s “Face the Nation”. “But she’s going to be one of 20 or 30 significant players. She’s not going to be the de facto leader.”

I'm not sure if he's saying that she won't be the future leader, or if he's saying that she's not guaranteed to be that leader. It seems to me that he thinks that she's one of 20 or 30 viable candidates for that spot at this time.

It's too bad we can't delete Newt.

She's WAY more significant to our conservative movement today than he is or ever will be. He already jumped the shark a long time ago.

Stop the little boy shout-down BS. This place is a discussion board, that means people post different points of view.

The people of Alaska own the oil the oil companies are pumping. Renegotiating a deal to make sure they get some of the money is not “redistribution”. It is making sure the owners of the oil get fair value for the assets the oil companies are making their profit from.

You would prefer the government collect money from the oil companies and NOT give it to the citizens of Alaska?

What “true” conservative do you have in mind that is for repealing taxes on oil companies?

It was the people who bought the oils money, that is how it works, companies collect taxes, they don’t pay them. But I see you are one of those that think tax increase are not tax increase if a republican increases them, how mccain of you.

It was giving their money back to them. It was the right thing to do.

Alaska gets oil revenue.

Alaska’s citizens profit from that.

Cool.

Gov. Palin was never the problem, she was the solution...

Really? Nothing against Palin, but the campaign has been all about identity politics instead of issues. I frankly don't care if Palin is a hockey mom or if the "First Dude" has a plumbing licence. What I want in a candidate is an intellect so sharp you can slice through steel with it. I want a guy (or gal) who is able to apply traditional conservative principles to new challenges, who is able to understand the effects of trade and science on the course of the nation as well as being able to condense that notion into an understandable message to the public. In short: I don't want a candidate to be like me, I want him to knock my sock off with the depth of his (or her) perception.

If I like Gingrich - and to a certain degree I do - it's because of his intelligence. Palin hasn't delivered yet in that regard (IMHO). So instead of talking candidates (it's much to early anyway), why not talk issues? And the one with the best grasp of the issues will emerge as the next candidate in due time anyway.

Hey, Newt. The leader is going to be whoever the most people want. If it's Sarah, then it'll be Sarah. We already know it's not going to be you. You followed your congressional member away from that path.

That's the plan. The people of Alaska pump the oil out of the ground. Royalties to the State of Alaska are set artificially low. That makes the Oil companies down in the lower 48 happy as it increases profits. That makes the Fed Government happy as it increses revenue for company tax. And they've got the expertise in spending tax revenue. And if the actual people at the front end doing all the work have to pay the hightest gas prices in the nation - that's a bonus.

Then along comes a hockey mom with some crazy idea that her job is looking after the interest of the people she represents, and not the proles in the lower 48, amd spoils that grand plan.

Newt indeed sees himself as the contender in 08

He will never get voted in

He is a natural progression of Dole McCain Gingrich

This country needs a conservative either with almost no record (you know, like Palin...Obama did it for the libs) or a very good conservative record.

Newt had his chance and blew it.

He doesn't know it though, and will continue to screw with the process as he sees himself as the nominee
