AP: Palinmania may stop Romney from running in 2012
Eh. If there’s any truth to it, I’d say Ambinder is a lot closer to the real reason than the AP is.
The surprising ascendancy of McCain’s eventual pick, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, and her popularity among some GOP conservatives have left Romney wondering whether he could wage a viable second campaign for the White House, according to friends and advisers…
“While (Palin) may not be popular with the winning majority that Barack Obama put together, she’s enormously popular with the losing minority that John McCain put together — and that pretty closely mirrors Republican primary voters,” said Rich Bond, former chairman of the Republican National Committee.
Charley Manning, a Massachusetts Republican operative who has worked as a Romney adviser, recently told a local radio interviewer: “I’d be surprised if Mitt ever ran again for president. I sure don’t think it was the best experience of his life.”
Taking on the ‘Cuda is a fool’s errand only if two things occur: (1) the economy recovers, leaving Mitt without an obvious argument for why the base should prefer him to her, and (2) Huckabee doesn’t run, thereby ceding social cons to Palin. Number one is obviously more important than number two since a sustained crisis would give the GOP a shot at the White House; absent that, I’m not sure why any Republican would want to run in 2012, especially a guy like Mitt who had to eat a ton of campaign debt this year and would probably end up on the hook for a ton more trying to take down The One’s money machine.
For a guy who’s supposedly sour on the idea, though, he sure seems to be making the right moves:

They have different liabilities:
Romney’s was his relative liberalism on social issues — or, at least, his very-late-in-life (professed) change of heart about those issues.
Palin’s was her relative difficulty handling tough, sometimes frankly unfair, questions from the media. (Yes, I know she got several beanballs thrown her way, but so do all conservatives, particularly if they’re minorities or women.)
Palin’s advantage is that she can overcome HER liability, but Mitt, for all his great gifts, can never run away from his rather liberal policy stances in the 1990s. (I’d rather have Mitt as President than Obama, of course!!)
Palin is still unproven. We need to see more of her taking hard, hard questions and shoving them back in Reporter’s faces. I want to see some flashes of brilliance and intellectual curiosity from her. I’d like to hear a few consecutive sentences that are free of grammatical errors.
And Romney has magic hair.
Sorry; he’s a complete fake who spent his daddy’s fortune and STILL could convince more than 1/5 of the Republicans to vote for him, Mormons excepted.

I think Romney/Palin in 2012 might work. I like Palin, but McCain has ruined her image among anyone other than hard core conservatives, due to his insistence on having her face hostile audiences, while being outspent 8 to 1. (What he never understood was that the media was wary of being too hostile to him because of his war hero and POW status. Palin was a different matter. The media really unloaded on her. With thermonuclear devices). If Romney wins and gets 2 terms, that will bring Palin into her mid-fifties by the time she gets to run again for president - still relatively young.
Romney is just another Vichy Republican.

Think about it, without his Personal Wealth to finance his
campaign, (and his mormon connections) I doubt he would have lasted a month in the primary race, since McCain and
Huckabee were Much better at Campaigning. Outside New England Republicans (endangered species) who would support him in the primaries

Before McCain, i wanted Romney...He can Deliver a good talk...He doesn't have porky pig syndrome...
I would like to see more of Jindal, the debates will prove Jindal to be superior to anyone else...
Also, I hope Republican pick the BEST and i hope he/she is the best at delivering his/her message than McCain was... Im also sure that if a younger candidate is picked, an OLDER candidate will be picked as VP (maybe a Romney type) It will NOT be Jindal/Palin or Palin/Jindal to young of a ticket and this will be driven home by the opposition...
I think ‘08 was Romney’s best chance. He had a clear field, especially with Rudy hiding in Florida like a damn idiot (which he is), and still Romney couldn’t put it away and let another RINO beat him. 2012 would be much harder for him.
The Republican party needs to reach out to women and minorities. I like Palin or Jindal for 2012.
Romney would do best to just exit the scene quietly. He’s a divisive candidate with a shady political background whom many of us will NEVER trust.
