COLUMBIA, S.C. – A South Carolina Roman Catholic priest has told his parishioners that they should refrain from receiving Holy Communion if they voted for Barack Obama because the Democratic president-elect supports abortion, and supporting him "constitutes material cooperation with intrinsic evil."

The Rev. Jay Scott Newman said in a letter distributed Sunday to parishioners at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greenville that they are putting their souls at risk if they take Holy Communion before doing penance for their vote.

"Our nation has chosen for its chief executive the most radical pro-abortion politician ever to serve in the United States Senate or to run for president," Newman wrote, referring to Obama by his full name, including his middle name of Hussein.

He wouldn’t have to say “who” to vote for, just make it issue oriented (”what” to vote for)-

vote for pro-death candidates who are hostile to Christian values, get excommunicated or pay a heavy penance.

Action -> Consequence.

>>All of New England should be conservative if most of the religious folk there actually wasn’t ignorant to politics

I couldn’t believe how many of my fellow parishioners were planning to vote for 0. I was in Mass the weekend before the vote and sitting in front of me was an older woman I’ve known since I was knee-high to a puppy. She had a Zero campaign pin on her handbag.

I am still a bit flabbergasted.

The priest isn’t forcing the congregants to do anything. He is describing the consequences of their actions. They remain free to act in a manner that separates them from Christ. We all are.

it really does blow my mind.

My mother in law calls herself a good catholic, she says she is against abortion etc and yet votes anything with a D and when I have tried to tell her and explain she is voting for abortion to be legal she just tells me that she has voted Dem all her life and she will not change now.

It’s like talking to a brick wall and even my wife has just said the same about her mother.

Well he’s done that in the past. Glad we agree.

He’s “spoken” out against supporting anti-Christian policies and politicians,

but has he ever assigned a consequence for doing so?

Yes. I believe it is obvious from his speeches that certain actions are against church teachings (sin).
