President-elect Barack Obama said on Thursday he would resign his U.S. Senate seat effective Sunday, which means he will not participate in next week's post-election session that could address the ailing economy and struggling auto industry.
Obama, who will be sworn in as president on January 20, said he would step down from his Senate seat to focus on the transition to the White House.
"It has been one of the highest honors and privileges of my life to have served the people of Illinois in the United States Senate," said Obama, who has served four years of his six-year term in the Senate.
Under Illinois state law, Democratic Gov. Rod Blagojevich is responsible for naming a successor to Obama. The appointee would serve Obama's term through 2010.

I’ve read that Emil Jones, the Senator who was Obama’s mentor, may get the seat. So may Jesse Jackson Jr., Danny Davis, Tammy Duckworth, and probably dozens of others. Only one wins the Golden Ticket.

I'm sure the Messiah has knowledge of all and won't let his seat get too cool.

I’m sure they won’t miss him; it wasn’t like he was there much anyway.

IMHO. I can't see why, if they want to run for President, that they aren't made to resign before beginning the campaign. I believe there is something unethical about searching for another job and trying to hold onto their secure one.
If these Senators were made to resign, there would a few less running and they would keep their cocamamie thought processes in that feckless institution.

No one will know he’s gone cause he was never there. I wonder if anyone keeps stats on senators like how many minutes they actually are doing the peoples business? Surely the One is in contention for least accomplished. What a POS.

I don’t like this Messiah name stuff at all. Some people actually believe it and headlines like this just continue to give the impression that this name should not be challenged. Lets call Obama what he is and it is NOT Messiah.

Too bad he didn’t take a leap of faith and resign when nominated to run for President.

It would be fitting if he resigns his senate seat only to be found ineligible for the Presidency by the electoral college on December 1.
