Two schoolgirls blinded in acid attack in Afghanistan

Two men on a motorcycle used water pistols to spray acid on girls walking to school Wednesday in the southern Afghan city of Kandahar, blinding at least two of them, military spokesmen said.

U.S. Col. Greg Julian said Afghanistan's National Military Command Center told him that four girls were hurt in the incident. Two were blinded and remain hospitalized, and two were treated and released, he said.

The men escaped after the attack, and no one claimed responsibility for it, but Arab-language network Al-Jazeera said Taliban militants were suspected to be responsible.

The incident occurred about 8 a.m. near Mirwais Nika Girls High School in the Meir Weis Mena district.

Kandahar government spokesman Parwaz Ayoubi gave different figures on the number of girls injured, saying six were burned, one of them severely. He called the attackers "enemies of education."

They are not “enemies of education”.

They are enemies of humanity and should be purged with extreme prejudice.

Obama’s announced “new” policy is to reach out to the tolly ban and broker their inclusion in the afghan guvmint.

removing women from Afghan public society will undoubtedly be a key tolly ban condition.

Muslims are going to have to reform themselves. We can’t do it all for them.

Where are the fathers of these little girls and how will they avenge their loss?

Bonus points for doing it from a moving vehicle, so you can run away before the girls have a chance to fight back.

This act just angers me beyond words. If I were the father I would literally get even with the perps, then make sure that they could not have children.

CNN? How did this story get past the censors? Oh, right. This brutality is ultimately the fault of the United States for interfering with their equally valid culture.

Of course when the Taliban was in power and brutalizing women wholesale, the feminists were too busy protesting that women cannot be admitted membership to the August Country Club.

For Immediate Release
Office of the First Lady
November 13, 2008

Statement by Mrs. Laura Bush

Yesterday, a group of young women on their way to school in southern Afghanistan were assaulted. The attackers threw acid on the girls’ faces, and three were seriously injured. My heart goes out to the victims and their families as they recover from this cruel attack.

The Taliban’s continued terror attacks threaten the progress that has been made in Afghanistan. Today, Afghan women are attending school, running for political office, and serving as police officers. Afghanistan has more than 60 female judges and 400 female journalists. Women make up 28 percent of Afghanistan’s parliament, and more than six million children - including two million girls - are now in school.

The United States and our Allies are working with the Government of Afghanistan to build more schools where children can learn, open additional roads so that commerce can grow, and provide basic healthcare for the Afghan people.

These cowardly and shameful acts are condemned by honorable people in the United States and around the world.

Acid Attack Shows Nature of Taliban, Pentagon Spokesman Says

By Jim Garamone
American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Nov. 14, 2008 – It’s a measure of the enemy in Afghanistan that Taliban terrorists attacked girls walking to school in Afghanistan on Nov. 12 by throwing acid in their faces, a senior Defense Department official said today.

“It was obviously a despicable attack,” Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman said. “It’s a reflection of the brutality and backwardness of the enemy we’re dealing with here. I certainly hope this is not any trend of tactic that the Taliban have, because it is a truly despicable act.”

Three girls were seriously injured in the attack.

“The Taliban’s continued terror attacks threaten the progress that has been made in Afghanistan,” first lady Laura Bush said in a statement released by the White House.

When they were in power in Afghanistan, the Taliban forbade women from attending school or even going outside. Women doctors were forbidden from practicing, and no woman was allowed to serve in political office.

Bush noted how that has changed since Operation Enduring Freedom began in October 2001. “Today, Afghan women are attending school, running for political office and serving as police officers,” she said. Afghan women are 28 percent of the country’s legislature, and almost 2 million Afghan girls are now in school, she added.

“The United States and our allies are working with the government of Afghanistan to build more schools where children can learn, open additional roads so that commerce can grow and provide basic health care for the Afghan people,” she said. “These cowardly and shameful acts are condemned by honorable people in the United States and around the world.”
