The US Supreme Court Wednesday ruled the US Navy can continue to use long-range sonar in exercises off the California coast, dismissing arguments that the practice was harmful to whales.

"Even if the plaintiffs have shown irreparable injury from the navy's training exercises, any such injury is outweighed by the public interest and the navy's interest in effective, realistic training of its sailors," the court said in a opinion written by Chief Justice John Roberts.

Another reversal for the most reversed Circuit Court in US judicial history - the Nutty Ninth.

Big defeat for comrade Ginsburg.

If the NRDC is really interested in helping the whales, they’d buy them ear plugs and ear muffins.

The Navy is well aware of concerns about the safety of sea life and will take whatever prudent courses they can to protect them. However, one nuclear sub sneaking near our west coast can really wreck your day (I’ll sacrifice San Francisco - to all the flakes, nuts and fruits there, we can then add “toast”, for an unbalanced meal).

This is a bunch of crap. I was a Sonarman in the Navy and we had whales swimming alongside the ship......even as we used the Sonar. Where do these people come up with this stuff? Guess we should just let subs come into our harbors?

Another slim 5-4 majority ruling. The average voter has no idea how many important legal issues are decided this way. Reason enough to vote for the more conservative presidential candidate every time.

As an old Sonar Tech I must give a big ol’ PING at this news. It is nice to get some good news, as there has not been much lately.
