I just finished a telephone conversation with my elderly aunt. Last night, she received a strange call from an unknown person who requested that she press "9" on her telephone keypad. Unfortunately, my elderly aunt did as was requested. Did she open her telephone line up to some mischief?

Help? I told auntie that I would check with experts, i.e., the freepers.

Probably. The hospital where my wife works can’t accept calls from prisons because there is a way that prisoners can call, and then place other calls charged to that number. Just a hunch, but I bet something similar has happened to your aunt.

I’ve heard about this before and it could very well be a problem. Call the phone company now.

That’s just weird. I’d be more worried about them calling back and harassing her later.

Might be wise for her to check her related bills carefully the next 3-4 months.

This can be a problem if you get a call like this on a company phone switch.

I don’t know, but I would strongly suggest contacting her phone service providers (both local and long distance, if they’re not the same) and asking them if this is something they’ve heard of before, and also asking them to notify you or your aunt immediately if there is any unusual calling activity being billed to her account (the latter request should be made in writing, as well as orally).

I seem to remember this guy

Having a fixation with the Number 9. Start there.

I’m trying to think of what kind of a call the caller might have set up prior to a three-way, that might have resulted in a detrimental confirmation of something on behalf of an unsuspecting third party on the line.
I can’t see a simple prankster seeking this type of an action by another person on the line.
It’s an interesting event.

A 19 is just a 9 with a 1 in front of it.
Clearly the 1 is hiding something.
