California Cracks Down ... On Bake Sales
CBS News ^ | November 11, 2008

(CBS) In California it's still legal to sell cupcakes, cookies and brownies in a bakery ... but not at a school bake sale.

That fundraising slice of Americana - loaded with sugar and fat - has been banned in California schools by government order, reports CBS News correspondent John Blackstone.

At Piedmont High School, principal Randall Booker has enforced a zero tolerance policy for what used to be a campus tradition.

"I love the bake sales," he said. "I eat them myself. But there are state laws that we just have to abide by."

To combat the epidemic of childhood obesity, new state nutrition guidelines strictly limit the fat, sugar and total calories of any food sold on campus during school days - even before and after school.

At Montclair Elementary, the hall is lined with photos of the annual fundraiser, where eating has always played a central role.

"Food sales are a big part of our community," said Wendy Morrison, the mother of a fifth-grader. "They're more than just the selling of food. It's community coming together."

Morrison mourns the loss.

"It was actually a beloved tradition at the school."

California's effort to get fat and sugar out of school foods goes far beyond the disappearing bake sale tables. School lunches no longer consist of hot dogs, french fries and nachos. Choices now include spinach salad, healthy burritos and grilled chicken.

Principal Booker also says Piedmont High no longer sells soft drinks like Coke and Pepsi.

And the kids miss the junk food.

"Oh, I used to have nachos and sour cream and chili like everyday. They don't sell that any more. But now I have to settle for, like, this whatever," said one student.

I'm so relieved not surprised that my state government is looking out for our children's welfare sending out the Cookie Cops.

Minimize expences

That must sound funny to those that think money grows in other people's pockets.

The only real FAT in California is in the heads of the political leadership, the leftist ideologues, and the bureaucrats.

What a fu*king mess they have made of a beautiful state.
And it is going to get worse, if that is possible.

Last year I learned the hard way about celebrating my child's 8 th birthday.

The school has banned any kid of cake, cookies or other sweets from any celebration.

I was told that we could have a party with all the trimmings as long as the trimmings where whole wheat this or that.

Tell you the truth in the school cafeteria the kids throw that crap in the slop barrel.

The schools in California have gone overboard in trying to become the parent instead of just teaching the three R's plus sex, plus why do I have two mommies and no man in the house, plus there is no God so don't pray it might offend little Muhammad during his daily prayers.

Those bake sales combined with the elementary school carnival were so much fun.

I loved the cake walks. I thought they were great fun.

california is living up to it’s slogan, the land of fruits and nuts. I’m so tired of this nanny/liberal/controlling/pot head/puke fest...I really feel for those out there hanging on fearlessly to their conservative values. We need to encourage conservatives in california somehow. Any ideas on how to bolster them?

I never gained weight in Europe, despite what I ate, because of all the walking.

That's it right there. Kids probably wouldn't be so fat if they were outside playing every day. Instead, they're on the internet or video games or just vegging in front of the TV, probably gorging on junk food at the same time because the parents can't be bothered to care.

It's up to the parents, not the government to ensure that their children are eating right and exercising.

But too many people have fallen asleep and would rather the nanny state take care of these things.

Home schooling is the answer or private school. Kids wouldn't be so over weight if they were not so sedentary. Playing EverQwest and other video games has taken the place of the normal daily exercise kids use to get by playing outside.

I wonder when if and when they will ban video games in homes or limit the amount of time spent playing these games. Obviously, the government wants to take more and more decisions away from parents. What is even sadder is that too many parents are willing to give up their decisions on what is best for their own child.

We are fat because we are wealthy. Obama is going to “fix” that.

My "you're so vain" ex and his bat-from-hell mother were both thin like the Obamas, and they were uncontestably the meanest, most back-stabbing people I've ever had to deal with for any length of time. They were probably starving themselves to meet their narcissistic ideals. Hunger makes a person mean.
