A roomful of academics erupted in angry boos Tuesday morning after political analyst Michael Barone said journalists trashed Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, the Republicans' vice presidential nominee, because "she did not abort her Down syndrome baby."
Barone said in an e-mail that he "was attempting to be humorous and ... went over the line."
Barone was speaking at the Palmer House Hilton in Chicago, to the 121st annual meeting of the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges, which calls itself the nations oldest higher-education association.
The liberal media attacked Sarah Palin because she did not abort her Down syndrome baby," Barone said, according to accounts by attendees. "They wanted her to kill that child. ... I'm talking about my media colleagues with whom I've worked for 35 years.
Barone, a popular speaker on the paid lecture circuit, is a senior writer for U.S. News & World Report and principal coauthor of The Almanac of American Politics."
About 500 people were in the room, and some walked out.
Barone did not dispute the accounts of his remarks. Asked about the comments, Barone said in an e-mail that he "was attempting to be humorous and, as many in public do, went over the line."
"Sorry for that," Barone said. "I was trying to focus on press hostility to Palin. I agree with [Washington Post media reporter and CNN 'Reliable Sources' host] Howard Kurtz that the press was much more interested in tracking down negative information on Palin than Obama."
Palins youngest child, her son Trig, was born in April. Televised shots of him during her convention speech helped endear her to conservatives. During the campaign, she said she would use the vice presidency to help families with special-needs children.

Barone’s a smart man.
I don’t believe that notion just arrived to him on the spur of the moment for a bit of levity. he evidently was given cause to believe this was true of some of his collegues. And, I believe he’s right. About it being the cause for some.
Of all the lines of attack they could take, they arrived first at attacking Trig. Even her daughter’s pregnancy only became news because they were claiming Trig was her daughter’s child. Abortion was never really an overt issue in the election because McCain did not want it to be so, but what did the Libs focus on with Sarah? Her lifestyle as a pro-life supporter in deed.
They hate that child and they hate her for having him. For having him and for having so many children. You are only supposed to have one or maybe two if you MUST have children. She has five. Married to her high school boyfriend. retained her figure and made it to Governor and relies on God. They hate her for all the reasons social conservatives adore her.
Same reason they attacked Justice Thomas.
Mine too, I'm sorry to say.
One of the other FR threads is sounding the alarm for McCain/Palin voters to opt out of cable and satellite enmasse. Why should we listen to them diss Gov. Palin day in and day out?
When the media loses half their audience, they lose everything, and they have it coming for shoving Obama down our throats. This is a protest! Why should we continue to finance them, and watch their propaganda, when we have the means to hit them all where it hurts the most--the wallet. Pull the plug and if you can't live without TV, try SkyAngel IPTV--conservative, family-friendly programming. If you have high-speed internet, this may be the way to go.
Time to abort the leftist media.
You are exactly right.
More people need this insight.
Seems a reasonable assumption.
Ah, mimaw, that little boy touches all open and loving hearts. A child, loved by God, and loved by his parents and his family, as it should be. Just a treasured life that will bring joy and love to all whom he touches. It’s just not hard.
I remember the birth of my first child. I suddenly had at least a passing understanding of God’s love for us.
The question is whether the Federal Government should be using tax payers money, and Federal policy to actively promote abortion, like the abortion loving Hussein has been doing throughout his entire life.
Why, the guy even voted for babies that survived abortion to be murdered. Hussein is by far the most pro-abortion president that has been elected ever.
Liberal don’t have open loving hearts.
I guess my point is that abortion laws against he abortionists will never be passed, let alone enforced.
If a state makes it illegal, which is not going to happen, a woman will just go to an adjoining state.
So why make a big deal about something that will never happen?
And the Pro-Life Constitutional Amendment is another pipe-dream. Why base public policy on a pipe-dream that will not be passed?
In fact, why have any laws at all ~ just let people do what they want any time they want.
I've got my guns, my neighbors have their guns, we'll be OK, but what about all those neighborhoods full of Leftwingtards who are unarmed and afraid of guns?
Do they just turn into game animals or what?(/sarc)
They may have booed him, but he was right. All it took was scratching a little under the surface of female media personalities, and other feminists to reach that conclusion.
He was absolutely correct about this. Why did he seem to retract it later? Moral cowardice?
Did you hear any liberals in the media praising Sarah Palin for choosing NOT to abort Trig? I certainly didn’t
No. It's painful. There are people who think Trig Palin should not be a life. By what right?
I'm sure he, like all other elitist black 'leaders' know exactly what Planned Barrenhood is up to. That's the only way they know to fight the 'War on Poverty'.
Yes.
Uh huh, no, I’m not going that route, sorry.
I agree. And Palin is the freshest thing to come along since Newt. I wish we had a lot more talent to draw from but where are they?
