Voting experts are expecting a huge wave of military absentee ballots this year. The 184,000 troops in Iraq and Afghanistan have a lot at stake in the vote to choose their next commander-in-chief.
The mechanics of military voting are better than they used to be. But "better" doesn't always cut it for troops in war zones.
Teresa Purcell got a call from her husband nine days before Election Day. "You're not going to believe this," he said, "we're not going to be allowed to vote for president of the United States because we're not getting the ballots."
Robert Purcell was calling from Afghanistan, where he's serving with the New York National Guard.
He told his wife his troops got ballots, but that they were the wrong ones.
"He said, 'They gave us the ballots for the local Puerto Rico election,'" Teresa recalls.
It's not clear what happened, or whether the snafu can be fixed in time for his 13 troops to meet New York's deadline.
But his phone call coming from a true battleground on the eve of the U.S. election illustrates the many glitches in military voting.

That is it! This will stop ..I don’t give a flying fig if Obama has been ordained god of the Socialist world...our Military will be treated fairly. Enough of this BS.
Allegra,
What is your take on the prevailing attitude among the military and civilian contractors as to the outcome of the election? Just curious.
Take care
gee, maybe about 230 of these votes will be from minnesota and all
be for al franken!
They fight for free elections in other countries and are dentied the same back home. Sickening. Thank you for those links, they should be allowed to vote early.
One thing is certain...if battlefied voting operations were established, there would never be any ACORN representatives monitoring the sites, cowardly rats that they are.
I kiss and hug my brother every chance I get and tell him that he is my hero. Our entire family is proud of him and shows him all the time. I am so sorry you were denied that. I wish I could give you a kiss and a hug but alas cyberspace won't allow it. Let me say that I thank you from the bottom of my heart for fighting for my freedom! You are my hero too!
The dimlibs pulled this same crap in 2000. No surprise here. Voting irregularities are part of their stock in trade.
Liberals whine about disenfranchisement when felons and illegals can’t vote but the bastards sure love getting military votes thrown out.
In a perfect world they’d be tarred and feathered for starters.
I don’t have my Canteen ping list handy, but take a look at this.
I can’t believe that our country has not done a better job of our elections. Is there a conspiracy out there?
You would think that after all the years of complaints from our deployed military getting to vote and the problems we have at polling places, someone would have found a solution.
Hope they get it fixed BEFORE next election.
Yes, the voting system here needs to be fixed, but don’t expect that with dims in charge.
By the next election, we may not have a military left in any foreign country, IF we have a military.
I think it is time for a national voter ID card, but the dims would never win another election with that in place.
Same old same old..It just makes me sick.
Let's just say you could hear a pin drop last Wednesday. Glum faces were everywhere. Some where shocked. One Air Force Major said to me "What have they done to us back home? What did they do?"
Now we wait to see just what method 0 will use to screw the country so many of us have put our best efforts into stabilizing.
Our brave troops sacrificed and freed this nation and a joint military and civilian command worked to stabilize it.
It makes me sick to think about it...the friends we've all lost, the backbreaking hours we've worked, the blazing summers, the sandstorms and of course all of the bombings. But we got it done.
And now he wants to undo all of that???
Getting absentee ballots, or not, to our military overseas seems to be a conscious effort on the part of some states. Not counting them seems to be another conscious effort by individual states. It is disgusting!!!!
This isn’t really unusual, and it isn’t sinister. Unless absentee/military votes might make a difference in a given election, there isn’t any real need to count them.
For example, if candidate X wins the election by 100,000 votes in a given State, and there are only 25,000 absentee/military votes, counting them would have no effect.
I am no Hero, but you could become one of mine :) Us old timers need hugs too, but I have a wife of 37 years who provides plenty of that.
BTTT
Yes, it is disgusting. I don’t see it getting fixed with dims in charge.
Thanks for being a part of the effort over there. I do understand how you and the rest must feel. The politicians of my day, VN era, were able to destroy everything that we had accomplished and rendered all the sacrifices moot. I certainly hope that our brain-dead electorate catches on to the 0 before he causes too much damage.
Take care. :0)
