Abortion Groups Confident Obama Will Push His Pro-Abortion Agenda

The leading abortion rights organizations in America say they are confident that Barack Obama will push for the full abortion agenda, including the Freedom of Choice Act, comprehensive sex ed and “reproductive rights” that include “affordable birth control.”

Planned Parenthood, NARAL (National Abortion Rights Action League) Pro-Choice America, and the Center for Reproductive Rights have each publicly congratulated the new president-elect for his victory.

“NARAL Pro-Choice America worked hard for our slate of pro-choice candidates across the country, including pro-choice Sen. Barack Obama, and that hard work resulted in the reaffirmation of our commitment to the values of freedom and privacy,” Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America said in a statement.

She added: “I’m proud that NARAL Pro-Choice America was the first major pro-choice PAC to endorse Obama for president.

Obama was the most pro-abortion presidential candidate in history.

In a speech to Planned Parenthood on the 35th anniversary of Roe v. Wade -- the Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion – Obama said: “Throughout my career, I’ve been a consistent and strong supporter of reproductive justice, and have consistently had a 100 percent pro-choice rating with Planned Parenthood and NARAL Pro-Choice America.”

Obama also pledged to push for the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) as president. FOCA was introduced in 2004, “to prohibit, consistent with Roe v. Wade, the interference by the government with a woman’s right to choose to bear a child or terminate a pregnancy, and for other purposes.”

The proposal would overturn all existing state regulations on abortion and partial-birth abortion, if enacted.

Now it is up to the president-elect to make good on his promises, the abortion groups say.

In a three-page letter, the Center for Reproductive Rights (CRR) asked the president-elect to pursue other specific items on the abortion-rights agenda:

1. To stop funding abstinence-only education programs as part of the in the Title V Maternal-Child Health Block Grant and the Community-Based Abstinence-Education programs. CRR also wants the new administration to appoint agency heads “who will not allow politics to trump science.”

2. To appoint federal judges "committed to supporting established constitutional rights.” Specifically, the letter emphasizes the importance of judges who will preserve “reproductive rights.”

3. To send representatives to the U.N. who will promote abortion and “reproductive rights."

The center also wants Obama to repeal what it calls the “Global Gag Rule” – also known as the Mexico City Policy, a Reagan-era policy that forbids U.S. funding going to support abortion overseas – and to begin again to fund the U.N. Population Fund, a program which the Bush administration stopped funding because it supported forced abortion and sterilization programs overseas.

The abortion rights group asked that the administration direct the new Health and Human Services Secretary to reassess the FDA’s policy restricting over-the-counter access to so-called “emergency contraception.”

Planned Parenthood's agenda, meanwhile, is simple, its Virginia affiliate told CNSNews.com.

"Planned Parenthood Advocates of Virginia feel he (Obama) will improve access to quality healthcare for women, support and protect a woman’s right to choose, support comprehensive sex-education to keep our young people healthy and safe, and invest in prevention programs including family planning services and breast cancer screening.”

Looking through the Constitution, can’t seem to find “reproductive rights” anywhere.

PEO voted against the Born Alive acts which would have given comfort to babies born alive after botched abortions. Source: "No. 1," said Mr. Obama, "whenever we define a pre-viable fetus as a person that is protected by the equal protection clause or other elements of the Constitution, what we're really saying is, in fact, that they are persons that are entitled to the kinds of protections that would be provided to a - a child, a 9-month-old - child that was delivered to term."

Yes. In other words, a baby born alive at 37 weeks is just as much a human "person" as a baby born alive at 22 weeks.

Mr. Obama, however, saw a problem with calling abortion survivors "persons." "I mean, it - it would essentially bar abortions," said Mr. Obama, "because the equal protection clause does not allow somebody to kill a child, and if this is a child, then this would be an antiabortion statute."

He also promised NARAL one of his first acts as president would be to sign FOCA into law--FREEDOM OF CHOICE ACT--which would eliminate ALL regulations from ALL abortions. So now that he has won the election he's going to make a 180 degree change in his stances on abortion and other issues?!

This is bad, people, VERY BAD!!!

Elections have consequences.

Yep, pretty much everyone (or at least everyone who cared about the issue) knew that Obama was pro-abortion. No one should be particularly surprised or upset when he follows through on his pro-abortion platform. Many on the pro-life side (including Sarah Palin) tried to point out Obama's extreme pro-abortion views, but it just didn't resonate with an electorate obsessed with the economy and drunk on Barry's Kool-Aid.

There is as much abortion in America as in any country in the Western World. What the hell is there left to push? Taunt the baby after it is aborted? A one month trial period after the birth of your baby? Perhaps a ChiCom type plan were abortions are mandatory if you have more than one child.

During the primaries I was told that the President had little power over abortion anyway, here at FR. I sure hope they were right and not trying to cover their faux-Conservative candidates a$$.

I don't get why all these pro-abortion people always refer to it as "reproductive rights". Who's denying them the right to reproduce? I don't see forced sterilization programs anywhere.

some things i fail to comprehend.
Far more lib dems have abortions than pubbies.
When you compare percentages, blacks have a disproportionate number of abortions.
Is it withing the black culture that killing babies is an ok thing?

I've read where he will close all the intensive care units for preemies in every hospital in this country.

If O’Fuerher had been POTUS back in 1957 I wouldn't be typing this now cause I was an 8-10 weeks preemie that was in the hospital for the first 3 months of my life.

We’ll go from 4K abortions a day to 5K abortions a day, to start. And FOCA expands taxpayer funding of abortions.

Folks what we will need to defeat FOCA, which is the worst of 0bamas pro-abortion plans, is basically a Pro-Life version of the huge protests against amnesty last year. If we can mount a campaign like that we can win.
