Stores say gun-control fears spur firearms sales

FORT WORTH — While watching Republican presidential candidate John McCain's concession speech, gun owner AJ Sullivan had a sinking feeling.

"Liberals like to ban guns. That's what it comes down to," said Sullivan, 25, a Texas Christian University student.

Sullivan was among hundreds scrambling to buy a weapon Thursday at the gun store Cheaper Than Dirt! — which sold $101,000 in merchandise the day after the election, shattering its single-day sales record, said store owner DeWayne Irwin.

Stories were similar across Texas, where residents are fiercely protective of their Second Amendment rights and now fear stricter gun-control laws under Democratic President-elect Barack Obama.

"There's a mindset here of freedom, and you've bitten off more than you can chew if you think you can come after Texans' guns," said Charlissa Stokes, co-owner of Panhandle Gunslingers, an Amarillo shooting range and gun store where sales have doubled the last few days.

At Houston's Memorial Shooting Center, gun sales are up 70 percent and "the whole wall of assault rifles is gone," said manager Richard Poulis.

Fort Worth's Cheaper Than Dirt! reported about $480,000 in sales in October 2007 but $890,000 last month, jumping to $1 million including the first four days of November, Irwin said. About half of the sales are guns, mostly assault rifles and other weapons that would be subject to the assault-weapons ban if it is reinstated, he said.

President Bush and Congress allowed it to expire in 2004, 10 years after President Clinton signed the ban into law.

Long guns and ammo are flying out of my gun store here in MA, too. Boston may want to take our guns but the rest of the state is answering with their wallets.

The HiPoint is butt ugly, but it has a surprisingly good trigger feel. I compared one to a Springfield at my local FFL. I can't speak for how it performs at the range.

This is Brady Center for Gun Control speak for defacto gun registration, outlawing gun shows, outlawing all privet sales, requiring access-limiting & high cost devices/safes for storage and outlawing about any rifle and even shotguns designed since WWI. I believe that the catastrophe has begun as well. It’s hard not to have a little fear when thinking of what could possibly happen now, but I have also steeled myself. I have collecting weapons, ammo, and survival gear. I intend to defend and survive in my home as long as possible. Should that become impossible, I will head into the wilderness and survive as long as I can. I will never submit, I will never give up.

I hope beyond hope that what you have described and what I have seen in my own mind does not come to pass. I hope that God is still with us. But hope aside, it would be stupid not to prepare for the endgame. This country has shown itself to be the most ignorant nation on earth in electing this man. Despite this ignorance, it is my intent to survive, it is my intent to fight for my country as so many heroes have done so before me. Speaking of fishing poles, the top AR is for the cat, the bottom one is for the goldfish, not pictured. They will have to suffice as my backup until I can breed and raise a couple of patriots (I recently got married, please allow sufficient time to procreate!)

The first will allow the likes of Bloomberg to go after dealers, even in other states.

We know what the grabbers mean when they talk about "commonsense measures", any bans, restrictions and regulations they can think of to make gun ownership more difficult and expensive. Restrictions on ranges (health concerns don't you know). Restrictions on ammunition (that'll come as part of the revamped and strengthened AWB).

The first target, if it's not included in the AWB, which I expect, it will be, may be .50 caliber sniper rifles which can shoot through armored limos.

I’m sure that the Minutemen of 1776 broke a few of King George’s laws.

Any law written by the hand of man which conflicts with the natural order is immoral, and ultimately unenforceable. The only way to make such laws stick, is to subjugate the people through extreme violence.

Are we going to let Obama subjugate us with his un-natural laws?

That's a sane observation, and entirely true. It's precisely why America hasn't been turned into a Marxist dictatorship already.

I’m not worried about dealers and stores running out of perfectly legal goods.

But the question is, how long will they remain perfectly legal goods? Not much past March 1st in some cases would be my bet. Even if they theoretically retain the ability to sustain a filibuster, which is still up in the air, the 'pubbies won't do so for a bunch of redneck militia nuts.
