Garrett leaves Dems blue

He pulls shocker: An easy GOP win

Thursday, November 06, 2008
By Jim Lockwood, Star-Ledger Staff

This time, U.S. Rep. Scott Garrett, (R-5th Dist.) surprised even himself.

As the reddest of Republicans in one of the bluest of states, Garrett, 49, of Wantage, Sussex County, has made a political career out of defying conventional wisdom and confounding critics and opponents.

Known as the most-conservative congressman in New Jersey -- and the Northeast -- Garrett defeated three prior Democrats by double-digit margins, but this year faced his toughest race against Democrat Dennis Shulman, 58, a psychologist and rabbi from Bergen County.

With a surge of Democratic voter registrations in the district, expected coattails from an Obama wave, and anti-Bush/GOP-incumbent sentiment running high over the economy, Shulman was poised for a close race, if not an upset.

Or so it seemed.

Well, LoBiondo’s district was Democrat for 20 years before he won it in ‘94 (Bill Hughes). I’m a little puzzled about your comment on Vineland. They’ve elected GOP Mayors for at least the past decade (a new one, Robert Romano, just this year).

Vineland is the largest city in New Jersey in terms of land area. It includes both tomato farms and housing projects. Cumberland County has a large black population (until the late 1940s, the overwhelmingly majority of blacks in New Jersey were in Cumberland/Salem/Cape May Counties), and a sizeable and rapidly growing Hispanic population, many of whom live in Vineland. Amazing that they elect a GOP Mayor, but so did Jersey City...

You think Pearce or Wilson will try to get their seats back in 2010 ? Losing the 1st was one thing, since it leans Dem, but it’s appalling and inexcusable we lost the Republican 2nd. First time NM has an all-rodent delegation in 42 years.

No new parties.

Take back the one we have. The dems took over our party, and we will take it back.

Well, Schundler’s election was a fluke initially under bizarre circumstances. Just did a check and Vineland is the only over 40k population city in NJ that has had 3 GOP Mayors in a row since 1996 (preceded by an Independent). Only it and Clifton currently have GOP Mayors (with Clifton’s James Anzaldi having been in office now for 18 straight years — tied with Trenton’s Doug Palmer for being the longest currently serving major-city Mayors in the state. It’ll be interesting to see if they try to break Boss Hague’s 30 year record reign in JC).

Yes — one of our finest guys! And one of the most unassuming. He is quiet and polite and a nice person. He was at the same table with my DH and me, at a DC function, and you would never know he was a politician.

Clifton was for many years, the most right-leaning urban area in New Jersey. Large German and Scottish American population, augmented by Italians moving over from Paterson starting in the late 1960s. Unfortunately, it is starting to get a little ghetto (gangs, violence, etc.) but for now they still have a GOP mayor and council.

Before today, I might have agreed with you. But when I listened to Limbaugh and Hannity today, and heard how the remaining RINOs are in essence instituting a pogrom of conservatives, I said "That's the last straw."

When Rupert Murdoch and Roger Ailes were talking about starting another news network, people said they were nuts and were going to lose $$ big time. But they did it anyway -- and Fox News Channel is now #1.

My point is: our time and treasure may be better spent starting over from scratch, rather than having an uphill fight against entrenched RINOs who will only leave kicking and scratching.

Unfortunately, I think it may be the opposite.

He — along with one or two others — represents the last gasp of conservatism in NJ.

As more people move to Jersey from Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens, the more our cause becomes diluted.

WOO HOO!

I’d rather have one Scott Garrett than 20 RINOS.

I'm from Sussex county and my son (who voted for the first time) and I voted for Garrett. This is one of the reddest county in NJ. I couldn't stand it if I lived in Bergen or those other blue counties.
Congratulations Scott Garrett!

Eff em!

Having read the “naked communist” you’ll know that it was always their plan to co-op BOTH parties.

It’s ours! We don’t retreat! We don’t surrender! In the words of Jean-Luc Picard, “The line must be drawn here!”

If we can’t fight a few RINOs out of the stupid Republican party, we can’t fight the Communists in the rest of the country.

Bleh. Crap district. If only we still had Bill Martini, but he’s now a federal judge.

So we got TWO very conservative New Jersey congressmen? (Chris Smith, right?)

Adapted from The Best of Both Worlds, Part II:

It's not that simple... This was the conservatives' party... we wrote the book on this party...

And the RINOs & Dems now know everything we know...

Yes...

Then, it's time to throw that book away.
You must let the GOP go, ROTB. It's the only way to beat the RINOs... the only way to save them.

When Republicans run as conservatives,

When Republicans prove themselves to be competent and PRINCIPLED conservatives they win. Look at Mitch McConnell.

We have a lot of Pubs run as conservatives in my state but pretty much everybody understands they are in it for the paycheck and have their finger in the wind.

And we also have people who are just first-class flakes run as conservatives.
