Vanities used to be well thought out, researched and/or funny and somewhat rare. Now the vanities consist of whatever crap pops in someone's head and they are drowning out whatever news is being posted.
I'm not the forum police, but please add you're rant, joke or pearl of wisdom to an ongoing thread.

Probably some new twist on blog pimping. It was too determined for money not to be involved.
Though I haven't been too critical because it's understandable for people to want to "vent" at a time like this.
It reached the point of imbecility (is that even a word) when I came across a bizarre vanity post from someone who insisted that George W. Bush could rescue his legacy by declassifying all U.S. government files related to UFOs.

It will probably settle down in the couple of days. Many people here are emotional right now on many levels and need to let it out.
Of course this evening it’s gotten humorous, if not childish, which I must admit I have participated in.
I think the “What If McCain Would Have Picked(humorous name)” makes for a fun game. People should keep it in one thread though.

I for one am deeply sorrowful. But I know that all things work together for good.
And these Vanity posts will die off as time goes on. Let the freepers make their heartfelt expressions known. If someone writes something noteworthy or profound in a vanity post, then we can all take notice. If somebody writes some meaningless tripe, then we can all take notice.
I think we should, however, make it a point to refrain from posting our vanity threads in "Breaking News." That, I suspect, is a bit too vain.
So let's solve the problem once and for all by having a vanity-burning here on FreeRepublic.
Then we'll write a book about it called "Fahrenheit 451-1/2" or something like that.

Agree. So many vanities it’s getting hard to find real news to discuss. Discussing the news is what this forum is supposed to be about.

I agree. I think it is out of control. And I think if it continues, that traffic to FR may begin to fall.
IMHO, why couldn’t there be a more distinct section or area for vanities? When I come to FR I click on Latest Articles and scan thru them, which now of course, is polluted and diluted with vanities.
Why not require vanities to be posted in a distinct section, called perhaps, for the sake of simplicity, “Vanities”. Then make anything posted under “Latest Articles” actually be news articles plus of course, folks’ comments.
Another suggestion: if you absolutely CAN’T RESIST THE URGE to say what you need to say in a vanity....then at least PLEASE put it in the ‘General/Chat’ category, so that those of us who don’t care can filter it out.
