From, Energy Information Administration"The electric power sector is the largest consumer of coal in the U.S. During 2007, the United States consumed 1,129.3 million short tons of coal, almost all of which was produced domestically.

The greatest demand for coal was by power plants that burn coal to generate electricity. Some 1,046.4 million short tons, 93 percent of the total, were used by the electric power sector to produce approximately half of all electricity generated. Each ton of coal consumed at an electric power plant produces about 2,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity so a pound of coal can supply enough electricity to light ten 100-watt bulbs for about an hour.

Largest State consumers of coal. In 2007, Texas consumed 104.8 million short tons of coal, more than any other state in the U.S. Of that total, more than 98 percent was for electricity generation. Other major consumers of coal were, Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, and Pennsylvania. Including Texas, these five states consumed approximately one third of all coal used to generate electricity in the country.

Top Ten Consuming States of Coal For Electric Power Generation in 2007 (million short tons) Preliminary data
Texas 102.9
Indiana 60.7
Ohio 59.5
Illinois 56.6
Pennsylvania 55.9
Kentucky 41.2
Georgia 40.8 <
West Virginia 38.0
Alabama 37.2

So you'ld better add Texas, Indiana, Illinois, Georgia, and Alabama to that list, xzins.

You forgot to add that wind turbines kill bats. Therefor we will all die from mosquito carried diseases and the problem (not enough electricity) is solved.

Hey, I wonder how Chicagoans will react when their power costs double. I’m sure this will be a great thing for poor people in general - oh, wait, Obama will have to come up with money to pay for peoples’ electricity, too...

BTW, did anyone hear Mitt Romney on Glenn Beck this morning, pointing out that much higher electricity costs would diminish the acceptance and usage of electric cars? I was clapping and cheering, since I’d posted the same thing in a couple threads on FR last night — a case of “dittos”?!

Wind power is actually fine. Unpredictable and unreliable but OK as a hit/miss source. There is a real medical problem IF they are located close {in hearing range} of someones home. The low frequency harmonics caused by the blades can cause a person to have problems dealing with it. IOW causing anxiety, agitation, etc. Not junk science but rather an actual incompatibility due to human anatomy and blade design etc. You'd have to give some living near a Turbine farm Valiums or Xanax.

Sorta hard to give a quick explaniation but man has no means to shut out low frequency noise as it actually penatrates the body and skull. The human skull is a part of the Vestibular Systemn forming your abilities to hear. Try this. Next time you hear a car pass with the Bass {Sub Woofers} blaring try stopping up your ears. It won't work. Higher frequencies it will stop but lower ones go on through the body.

Chicagoans will be told how it's BIG ELECTRIC that is causing their woes, and BIG ELECTRIC needs to be taxed, or nationalized to control costs.

BTW, did anyone hear Mitt Romney on Glenn Beck this morning, pointing out that much higher electricity costs would diminish the acceptance and usage of electric cars?

No, I didn't hear that.....but, HELLO! What, oh, what will the libs do without their electric cars? This is madness.

But, what about the poor bats?? (That’s quasi-sarcasm, but, I actually saw a news article about them, and wind turbines killing them, in the Smithsonian magazine, very recently.)

Low frequencies I know about: Among other things, I design subwoofers for a living! Where I used to work, there’s a concrete block wall over a foot thick, and 2 lesser walls, and about 40 ft. distance, between my office and the lab. When doing power tests (often at many hundreds of watts or more) the vibrations at low frequencies go right through (the walls, me...).

There's a windmill farm about 20 miles from me. It's near Oak Ridge, TN. I think the biggie there was worrying about geese. Never mind the fact you can go along the river below the mountain and see plenty. Except in migration they stay pretty low. I can also remember as a kid when there wasn't but a few wild geese around in these parts. Despite all the environmentalist warnings wildlife makes a come back.

Here's another interesting thing about Coal. Strip mining does leave a pretty nasty scar and if the land isn't reclaimed a bad run off problem. Nature in my area took care of it. The beavers moved in. They built natural settling ponds and most of the problem solved itself.

When I moved where I live now as a child 45 years ago although we lived in a rural area there wasn't any Big Game as such in the area. You had to drive 20 miles to hunt deer or Turkey etc. Now I can see all the game I want from my front porch daily. The weirdest thing I've heard though was a Game Warden telling me Copperheads were a protected species. I wonder how well he protects them around his house? /sarcsam

I know the feeling, sometimes when I hear a loud, bass noise, it seems like it goes through me, I get headaches, nausea and general lightheadedness. I've heard the same from people who live near Taos, New Mexico (Taos Hum) and Bristol, UK, (Bristol Hum) in both places, there are people who claim to hear a low hum and it makes them sick. There are some who claim that in those places the US/UK governments have secret experiments go on.

Some additional info, there were cases of people hearing a low hum in Kokomo, IN. One was a pair of fans at a Chrysler plant emitting sound at 36 cycles/sec, another was an air compressor intake at 10 cycles/sec. I checked Wikipedia.

It's likely due to Sensory Processing issues like Vestibular {Inner Ear } dysfunction as well it can involve the optic processing system. The result being in extreme cases Myoclonic Seizures or involuntary muscle spasms usually in the upper Torso.

As for myself I have <

Stimulus-sensitive myoclonus is triggered by a variety of external events, including noise, movement, and light. Surprise may increase the sensitivity of the patient.

Here's an article describing Myoclonic seizures http://www.ninds.nih.gov/disorders/myoclonus/detail_myoclonus.htm

The disorder or disorders involved in this can also produce major anxiety attacks and is often mistaken as Panic Attacks or Anxiety Disorders by doctors who don't ask the right questions including Vestibular History, sinus allergies, etc..

You can not treat this with antidepressants as it can be very dangerous to do so but rather the use of meds like Xanax is needed and the doctor has to understand what low dosage maintenance is. IOW low doasge consistant in the bloodstream 24/7. Usually .5mg or half a MG taken 4 times a day does the trick. But a 2 mg twice a day will make it worse.

It generally never goes away I've had it since 1994 and had to take medical retirement or disability because of it at 37 years old.

My own therory based on personaal experiences with it? No government conspiracy. Just modern technology is surpassing some persons abilities to process the now more intense and rapid sensory stimulation be it audio or visual in origin. Think of it as a computer processor with too many task opened at once for the maxium RAM and speed it can handle.

No!!!

They are “boxing the herd” or whatever ya wanna call it. See, if ya can’t burn coal, or burn a fire in the firepit in the backyard, or have a Heathkit 1211NP 75 year home nuclear boiler, or be dependent on Coal fired power plants, just how does anyone propose to provide for the energy resources to heat our homes? (Baby, it’s COLD outside!)

These people should be issued a loincloth and a pointy stick, and released into a remote wilderness area for about a month or so, and then monitor their mood level.
