Adviser: "McCain to win every red state...probably win Pennsylvania and Iowa."

On a brief jump flight from Philadelphia to Scranton, McCain adviser Charlie Black and Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback came back to talk up the campaign's conviction that the glass if half full. "Four years ago at this point, George W. Bush was down five points in Iowa," Brownback said. "Today John McCain is down one point in Iowa."

He was citing an unreleased internal McCain campaign poll of the state, which was completed last Thursday, said Black. (The campaign stopped doing its own polling after Thursday, he added, because television time through the election all had to be purchased by Friday.) However, public polls in Iowa suggest that McCain is still in a big hole. Last week, the Des Moines Register poll, which has a good record of prediction in that state, put McCain's deficit at 17 points, with Barack Obama garnering 54 percent of the support.

"McCain is in a good position to win every red state," Black said. "Plus he is probably going to win Pennsylvania and Iowa." Polls have narrowed sharply in Pennsylvania in recent weeks, though Obama still has a sizable lead of 7 points in the Real Clear Politics average. Black said he had seen a poll recently that showed McCain tied in the Philadelphia suburbs, a crucial swing region of the state.

We need to get the Obama coal plant bankruptcy tape into play in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and the soft-coal region in the west. I see Palin cited it in Ohio.

In PA and OH, it’s probably more damaging than the Wright association. (Any other coal states on the fence? I think we’ve got all of them, except PA, OH and the unwinnable IL.)

Who is this adviser? Iowa is a red state from 2004. I call it purple (along with NM and NH), since all three switched parties from 2000 to 2004.

Internal polling is to determine if an ad campaign will work.

I’m in the crucial Philadelphia suburbs. I have never seem so many signs for pubbies in my tenor here.

Plenty of Obama ones too, but we are given them a run for their money.

I’m voting for the Mick and the Chick!

In Iowa, we call it the Des Moines Red Star.

I don’t think the oversight was intentional. He mentioned IA and PA becuase the campaign itsef is focusing on these two states. McCain is going to NH today.

Let’s not discuss WI any more. Lord knows who may be monitoring us here at FR.

LOL! Isn't "Mick" a sometimes-perjorative for Irish people? The "Mc" says to me he's a Scotsman. But I could be wrong...

SPEAKING of PA, even McCain's internal polls are a bit skewed. They've been getting a lot of irritated hangups lately, and, sorry to say, I was one of those hangups last Thursday. I am ON RECORD with the RNC as a DEFINITE McCain voter, and yet they keep calling me! Stop preaching to the converted already!

I started an informal poll of my own beginning Friday (which happened to be Hubby's birthday, so we had loads of people to talk to) and half of the 60 or so I asked said they were getting really irritated by the McCain calls, and complaining that you can't complain to a recording! Republicans and Democrats alike in PA plan on voting McCain - we hold a grudge, and the God and gun clinging reference still has a lot of hackles raised! Go for the undecideds!

Oh, I’m voting. Don’t worry about that.
Problem is, I live in the People’s Republic of Massachusetts.
Nuff ced(although at least we have a live body running against John Effin’ Kerry this year).

I hope you’re right about NH being solid, but I don’t see it. Southern NH is now Greater MA, and you know what that means.

Was that watering hole in South Boston?
If you tell me it was on Beacon Hill or the South End, then you’ve got something.

What's the deal with Iowa?

Pennsylvania has some major parasite nests (the biggest being Philadelphia and Pittsburgh) so it is little wonder that Pennsylvania remains in play for 0bama, but Iowa? I know there's one parasite nest, Ames (I know that only from crossword puzzles), but you figure most of the state is occupied by normal, taxpaying, traditional American families (ie., "Republicans").

I cannot figure out why ANY state between the coasts would go rat....

Luckily for us, it’s not ultimately up to the Ohio state government: it’s up to local election officials and observers.
