Brought Home My AR-15
11-1-08 | Vanity

Posted on 11/01/2008 4:16:33 AM PDT by Wpin

Brought home my new AR-15 yesterday. For those who don't know what that is, the AR-15 is the civilian model of the M-16 rifle. It is what one would call an assault gun. I am in my fifties, a hunter who has always had hunting rifles and shotguns. A man who has always got a sense of pride of ownership for his guns. Cherishing the thought of passing my collection on to my children.

This is different, there is no joy. In fact, I felt sadness as I drove home with my new possession. You see, I purchased this weapon as a safety precaution. Not from home invasion by criminals, not from looters, but from a possible civil war that I fear may be close to being unavoidable.

Our nation is on the precipice of falling into the darkness of socialism, not the friendly European kind, but the Nazi like type Germany experienced in the thirties. The fascist socialism that has been so cruel in history. The kind that takes from all but their favored. The kind that does not tolerate opposition and indeed crushes it. The kind that we all know inside is driven by evil rather than good.

So, bringing this gun home was a sad day, a day I would rather not remember. And, after familiarizing myself with this new weapon and becoming proficient in it's use I intend on putting it away and hope to forget about it.

But, should the day come when I need to remember, I will be prepared.

I like my AR 15. I need to actually sight the thing in, though. That’s tomorrow’s fun.

....all the gold in the world won't matter because the only commodity worth anything will be bullets.

My wife's cousin spent several years working for Blackwater in Kosovo. (he's in Iraq now) He said the same thing about the folks in Kosovo. Bullets became currency to the locals, along with toilet paper.....

“If there is war coming... so be it... I don’t want it... but I will be a Patriot and keep GOD in my heart and do my duty for my Nation and our Founders. I pray that day never comes... but if it does... my Boy Scout training will kick in... as I live ‘“Be Prepared’.”

I hear you, friend. I pray it does not come to the tragedy of a civil war (and a civil war, first and foremost, is a tragedy: Family v. family; neighbor v. neighbor; it is the ugliest of things; but, alas, it is also sometimes the only recourse left). God be with us.

Does anyone know the current number of small arms in private ownership in America? The number they used to say was something like 250 million. I think 1 billion would be a nice round number. Go out and buy more guns.

“converted to full auto”

With about as much effort as carving a baseball bat into a hockey stick.

We would not need a civil war if we would actually allow secession. When we have two groups of people with such opposite political philosophies, why should they be forced to live with each other?

We went to the gun shop in our nearest city yesterday.

My husband and I signed up for conceal and carry classes. They are at 3 pm this afternoon.

The salesman is recommending a revolver since I want something that will not need a lot practiced training. I wouldn’t want to be flustered if I needed to use it in an emergency.

I have absolutely no experience with firearms.

While full-auto may be fun for burning through money quickly, I’d prefer to be a better marksman with a semi-auto or bolt action rifle.

“Like other folks have said though, full auto is over rated. You’d be better off improving your marksmanship and choosing your targets wisely.”

Exactly.

As already noted, you tend to shoot less accurately using full auto. You also run out of ammo very fast. A common saying IRL, movies, books, etc is “make every shot count.” That’s very hard, if not impossible to do in full auto. Maybe if you expect ‘human wave’ attacks but if so, I suggest switching neighborhoods.

At the end of the day that threat of violence is a constraint on the behavior of our politicians. Were it not for that, we'd have have a totalitarian system put in place already. But the fear of some crazy person's bullet keeps them from getting too out of line.

This is very interesting idea. It rings of pure truth. I just read your post aloud to my husband, and ( by the way) we are off to the shooting range this afternoon to learn how to shoot.

Bought my first A2 preban Colt in mid 80’s for like 400 bucks; should have bought a dozen of them.

Sure, if you get the lower from a M-16

Actually, you just need a M-16 lower (with the 4th pin hole), the FA selector switch, the M-16 bolt and hammer and finally you need the auto-sear assembly.

It isn't the difficulty, it is the mandatory 10 years at club fed that get you.

I fear you are absolutely right.

Stock up on some food too.
Wheat does not perish if you store it properly - use a 5 gal. bucket and put some dry ice on top to displace the air. Seal it after it has evaporated and there is no air in there. It will last for centuries.

Honey lasts a long time too.

Revolvers are the original point and click device. A double-action only pistol, such as my Smith & Wesson MP9c, is as well. It has an safety integrated into the trigger.

You may want to see about shooting a round or two before you buy to make sure the recoil is tolerable to you. You should practice with it enough to be able to put lead where you want it. Tolerable recoil will make that more enjoyable.

In Vietnam they took my M14 away from me and gave me an M16. Twice during fire fights that piece of crap jammed and had to be field stripped to clear the round that was jammed in the breach by a poorly designed receiver mechanism.
I would never own an M16 or its civilian version the AR15.
There are lots of better weapons around.

Full auto has its uses, and none of them are at 500 yards. Inside 50 ft though it can be quite useful. That said, I agree with the earlier poster who stated that when full auto IS needed a shotgun with 00 buck is a great choice.

I have a couple of SKSs and couple of very accurate bolt actions. I don’t have a good shotgun for that type of work though, just a long barreled Browning BPS. I might have to remedy that.
