It seems that the final days of the presidential campaign have made Erica Jong and her friends more than a little anxious.
A few days ago, Jong, the author and self-described feminist, gave an interview to the Italian daily Corriere della Sera, the choicest bits of which were brought to my attention by the reliably sharp-eyed Christian Rocca, the U.S. correspondent of Il Foglio, who published excerpts on his Camillo blog. Basically, Jong says her fear that Obama might lose the election has developed into an "obsession. A paralyzing terror. An anxious fever that keeps you awake at night." She also says that her friends Jane Fonda and Naomi Wolf are extremely worried that Obama will be sabotaged by Republican dirty tricks, and that if an Obama loss indeed comes to pass, the result will be a second American Civil War.
Here's a translation of Jong's more spirited quotes to the Milan-based Corriere, as selected by Rocca.
"The record shows that voting machines in America are rigged."
"My friends Ken Follett and Susan Cheever are extremely worried. Naomi Wolf calls me every day. Yesterday, Jane Fonda sent me an email to tell me that she cried all night and can't cure her ailing back for all the stress that has reduces her to a bundle of nerves."
"My back is also suffering from spasms, so much so that I had to see an acupuncturist and get prescriptions for Valium."
"After having stolen the last two elections, the Republican Mafia "
"If Obama loses it will spark the second American Civil War. Blood will run in the streets, believe me. And it's not a coincidence that President Bush recalled soldiers from Iraq for Dick Cheney to lead against American citizens in the streets."
"Bush has transformed America into a police state, from torture to the imprisonment of reporters, to the Patriot Act."
She also laments that not all of America's men of letters share her devotion to Obama.
"Tom Wolfe and John Updike are men of the right and Philip Roth is at this point a hermit who leads a monastic life in Connecticut, far from everything and everybody."
Luckily, she said there is her and Michael Chabon, who, she says, have "taken the place of Susan Sontag and Norman Mailer respectively."
They have the same political sensibilities, she said, but a better "sense of humor."
1859.
LOL!
If people are dumb enough to burn down their own neighborhoods, than the government ought not to assist these people with rebuilding.
America is a better place if Erica just stays away, better yet if she will take her ailing, crying, hurting, sleepless comrades with her and even better yet if she will STFU.
If there is a confrontation and there is harm or damage you certainly won’t find erica and her tofu eating freinds around...they will simply incite someone else to do it.
Anyway, bring it on, I’m ready.
Well if they do they sur can’t move in with me!
Oh my goodness, when did she get run over by the truck?
What a terrible waste, just reall too too bad.
You have to be NOT WHITE to be a hate crime victim or or be the object of racism.
Silly girl?
If you are white you can only be murdered or injured or something mundane like that.
Nope, no hate crimes for whites.
I didn’t hear about the tanks.
Will we all get one?
Tell her I said if she wishes for a civil war there are a lot of people I know who say bring it on.
It’s past time.
I have an old friend who says that.
We don’t need a Lee or Jackson. We need a Grant, Thomas and Sherman.
Beside, it’s not the War of Northern Aggression since the south started it. It’s called the War to End Slavery for where I come from. A war that was between Republicans who won the war and democrats who lost it. A war that was between Americans and Confederates.
Tommy Franks will do nicely as well, thank you.
My mom always says it... she has since I was very little.
Everyone who fought that war was an American. EVERY one.
Wrong, wrong, wrong. By the way, you’re wrong.
Americans are citizens of the United States of America. Confederates left that country to become citizens of the Confederate States of America. Had the Confederacy won the war, they wouldn’t be Americans no more than Canadians.
Then you, sir, are a yankee.
That you continue to believe that tripe is proof of how long a lie can last. I'll bet you believe that the Emancipation Proclamation freed all the slaves too? (hint: It did NOT - specifically, slaves from border states - including Maryland were NOT freed - only those in the South). The War of Northern Aggression (correctly termed that because Lincoln waged war against his own citizens) may have been fought by the yankees to free slaves, but by the South it was fought to preserve one of the most important aspects of the Constitution - The rights of States versus a federal government. In case you are not aware - the federal government as originally defined in the Constitution was to be almost an afterthought compared to the right of the States.
Lincoln abrogated the rights of several states, and the result in the bloat we now see in Washington.
Forgot to mention Franks(slaps forehead)
If you care to educate yourself, read why the Confederate States of America wanted to Secede. Read the “Declarations of Secession” written by the rebel leaders themselves and count how many times the terms, Slave-holding states, Non Slave-holding States, Slave States and slaves is used.
