This is from my own research and I have not seen this printed anywhere before.
The website of the Chicago Democratic Socialists of America has an archive of their newsletters. Their Newsletter "New Ground 69 March - April, 2000". In this newsletter they give their "Recommendations for the March Primary Election". My emphesis in Bold.
For Congressman of the 1st Congressional District, the Executive Committee was faced with two very good candidates. As we are not making endorsements but merely recommendations, we felt no conflict in recommending both Bobby Rush and Barak Obama.
Bobby Rush is the incumbent Congressman. He was also a candidate for Mayor of Chicago in the last municipal elections, endorsed by Chicago DSA. While he hasn't always been the ideal Congressman from a left perspective (being a cosponsor of the "NAFTA for Africa" bill, for example), he's generally been quite good. Barak Obama is serving only his second term in the Illinois State Senate so he might be fairly charged with ambition, but the same might have be said of Bobby Rush when he ran against Congressman Charles Hayes. Obama also has put in time at the grass roots, working for five years as a community organizer in Harlem and in Chicago. When Obama participated in a 1996 UofC YDS Townhall Meeting on Economic Insecurity, much of what he had to say was well within the mainstream of European social democracy. I found that a month ago on Google 2001, then I saw it reproduced on a website, might have Ace or Gateway, you need the research to back it up, a recording, at this point the only thing that will further damage Obama is video or audio.
Good work on your part. Hope a tape/transcript turns up. Universities love to record these kind of conferences for posterity. There might also be a reference in the school newspaper.

Chicago DSA is affiliated with the national Democratic Socialists of America but is separately incorporated. Anyone paying national membership dues in the Chicago area is automatically a member of the Chicago DSA local.

I would love to see the contract Obama signed with The New Party.
By the year 2000, Obama learned what to say that would not be viewed as overtly radical. European Social Democracy was not too far from the mainstream in the year 2000. He has made a career by masking his intentions with his words.
Scary words indeed.

This February 24, 2000 recounting of a debate between Barack Obama, Donne Trotter, and George Roby - then vying to replace Bobby Rush - includes the following:
All three said they were in support of gun control legislation, with Obama citing a need for higher taxes on ammunition and registration requirements on firearms, and Trotter citing his 1989 support of background checks and seven-day waiting periods in the State House.
All three also said they were opposed to the oil extraction proposed in the Alaska wilderness. On foreign policy, all three agreed that while attention to dangerous fringe groups and other potential problems was needed, the U.S. should not take on the role of the world policeman. They even agreed on a proposal to legalize medicinal marijuana, winning them all pro-marijuana T-shirts from a member the audience.
All four candidates participated in a live debate on WVON-AM radio Friday morning, and Rush's challengers had another debate later in the day at the Trinity United Church of Christ on West 95th Street.
The last isn't really that significant, but it is yet another link between BHO and TUCC. "
He could have said anything and paused and all the cheering idiots would have have reveled in his words. I have to believe there are more patriotic Americans than useful idiots at this point in our history. As Sarah Palin has said “I trust in the wisdom of the American people”.
In 5 more days we will know the balance of idiots to patriots. May the patriots win!

Over three hundred people attended the first of two Town Meetings on Economic Insecurity on February 25 in Ida Noyes Hall at the University of Chicago. Entitled “Employment and Survival in Urban America”, the meeting was sponsored by the UofC DSA Youth Section, Chicago DSA and University Democrats. The panelists were Toni Preckwinkle, Alderman of Chicago’s 4th Ward; Barack Obama, candidate for the 13th Illinois Senate District; Professor William Julius Wilson, Center for the Study of Urban Inequality at the University of Chicago; Professor Michael Dawson, University of Chicago; and Professor Joseph Schwartz, Temple University and a member of DSA’s National Political Committee.
