Vote as if your life and your liberty depend on it, because they do.
Iranian Nuke Scientist: Weekend Quake was a Nuclear Testby Hillel Fendel (IsraelNN.com) A weekend 5.0 Richter earthquake in Iran was actually a nuclear bomb test, says an Iranian nuclear scientist claiming to be working on the project.
Meanwhile, Secretary of Defense Gates has warned that the American nuclear arsenal is deteriorating with age. Barack Hussein Obama has vowed not to authorize research on new nuclear weapons like the Reliable Replacement Warhead (RRW), which is both more reliable and less vulnerable to misuse than the existing ones. This "Presidential candidate's" own proclaimed policies--not what the Republicans say about him, but what he says about himself--are guaranteed (his own running mate Joe Biden says so) to put the lives of 300 million Americans at risk. Please vote as if your life and your liberty depend on it, because they do.

The USGS website has the epicenter at 26.533°N, 54.985°E which puts it out in the Persian Gulf waters and 18 miles deep.
I roll with our data versus their muslim declarations.

Interesting. Then if they are bluffing, it probably means their program is not as far along as they'd like(us to believe). I haven't heard any accounts of Israel attacking Iran...If this were true, Israel wouldn't be waiting for the next “test”.

If that is true, it could mean that an Iranian submarine broke up and a nuclear weapon detonated as it settled to the bottom or it was a deep tremor.

I think VaBthang4 meant that it was 18 miles deep under the earth, not in the Ocean...I don't think there are Ocean depths that go to 18 miles.

It’s just Iran trying to prove it’s joined the nuclear club in case McCain wins. If Obama wins this deception won’t be necessary.

Well, given the fact the Gulf is notoriously shallow and even the Marianas Trench (deepest point on Earth) isn’t even seven miles down, I’ll vote for the quake.

Magnitude 5? Almost as believable as the missile photochop. Probably the same genius behind this. Anybody seen Baghdad Bob lately?

Of course they are bluffing. They had an opportunity - an earthquake nearby - and they wanted to try to impress friends and influence enemies. However, producing seismic waves approximately equivalent to a magnitude 5 earthquake would actually take a relatively small bomb - maybe 1/2 the size of the weapons dropped on Japan. Smaller is actually harder to do - in an initial effort you’d want to over-engineer to ensure you actually generated a runaway reaction. The second thing going against them is the nature of the seismic waves are very different. An atomic explosion is a relatively short, sharp bang. Seismic events are typically longer, more drawn-out as pressure is released, plates lock, then the new sticking point breaks under the stress, etc. These guys are bluffing, badly.

Like you say, nuclear blasts and earthquake seismographs are very distinctive and everyone knows which is which. Can the Iranians really be that ignorant?
