If Obama wins on Tuesday night, Chris Matthews's mocking this morning of the notion that the polls are tightening will be soon forgotten. But if McCain pulls off the upset, Matthews's show of smirking triumphalism will take its place in the halls of journalistic hubris near the famous photo of Harry Truman holding up the Dewey Defeats Truman front page.
Just before Matthews came on, Andrea Mitchell ended her set-up segment by mentioning that the McCain campaign had released internal polls showing the race tied in the battleground states. When Meredith Vieira opened the Matthews interview by asking him to comment, the Hardball host went into full mock mode.

That's because he's more worried about another kind of pole tightening............
Hopefully Matthew’s will have tears running down his leg late Tuesday night!
“Matthews Mocks Mention of Tightening Polls”
Why wouldn’t he?
I suspect they'll be Olbermann's.
Hey don’t pee in his punch bowl. He likes that tingly feeling in his leg.
Like to see matthews wearing a garbage can on his head.
The only ‘tingly feeling’ Matthews will have on the 5th (hopefully) is his own, warm tee tee as he ‘loses it’ when McCain wins.
This is a “Tee-It-Up” post by a newbie.
The IMs have gone out.
The newbie posse should be here shortly with wet their special brand of “reluctant” pessimism.
When you refer to a nobody some kind of introduction is in order. Who is Chris Matthews and how could he possibly make history?
I’m looking forward to the death watch of the MSM on 11.4/5 and beyond.
I noticed on Drudge’s daily numbers that in the last couple of days it has jumped from 19M to 29M —the lamestream press is being outgunned on getting the real scoop out —the “lames” can’t compare to the power of the internet and information won’t be contained as before —
The MSM is son convince of their own immortality that they can’t see that the light at the end of the tunnel is the train coming right at them.
Post of the day! LOL!
If Obama wins, we’ll know it by the end of the day on Nov. 4th. If McCain wins, the Dems are going to issue so many challenges, that he won’t be declared the victor for many days or weeks afterwards.
