Obama, McCain should lead us beyond whispers of riots
The Chicago Tribune ^ | October 27, 2008 | Dawn Turner Trice

If Sen. Barack Obama wins the presidential election, he will have a major party in Chicago's Grant Park with thousands upon thousands of celebrants. You can imagine that the police presence will be breathtakingly tight.

But police departments around the country are gearing up in case Obama doesn't win. The thinking is that because of the historic nature of his candidacy, there may be riots if supporters feel the election was stolen.

I do understand why people who feel disaffected succumb to the urge to lash out when some event acts as a spark. I grew up hearing about the 1965 Watts riots and those after the 1968 assassination of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

Chicago and other cities were set on fire.

Rioters paid a huge price to express their hopelessness, which in the end was about poverty, inequality, racial discrimination, joblessness and police brutality.

You'll always have a contingent of knuckleheads who are merely opportunists.

But most often people are just fed up.

Now pundits (on the right and left) are suggesting or flat-out saying that some black people may riot if Obama loses his presidential bid and foul play is suspected.

Some might. We hope not. The problem is that this country has such a tortured past regarding democracy. For years blacks couldn't vote. Women couldn't vote. When blacks were allowed to vote, they faced grandfather clauses and poll taxes and all sorts of suppression tactics.

Certainly, police departments must be prepared. But the candidates can help curb any potential violence by appealing now for calm.

We have nothing to fear, but fear itself. By the way.. McCain will not steal the election, he will win it fair and square. If anyone is a crook and thief , it is Obama and his Acorn ilk.

They’ll only burn down their own neighborhoods. The buses won’t be running that day.

We’ll get a little taste of that if Philly wins the World Series.

I hope people draw the appropriate conclusions.

Happened in LA after the "Rodney King" riots. The locals found that they had to travel several miles to find a grocery store or a bank.

A pity for those innocent folks caught up in it, but justice for the yobs who caused the melee.

I’m not worried about McCain supporters one bit, regardless of the outcome.
