Palin allies report rising campaign tension
Politico ^ | 10-25-08 | Ben Smith

Even as John McCain and Sarah Palin scramble to close the gap in the final days of the 2008 election, stirrings of a Palin insurgency are complicating the campaign's already-tense internal dynamics.

Four Republicans close to Palin said she has decided increasingly to disregard the advice of the former Bush aides tasked to handle her, creating occasionally tense situations as she travels the country with them. Those Palin supporters, inside the campaign and out, said Palin blames her handlers for a botched rollout and a tarnished public image — even as others in McCain's camp blame the pick of the relatively inexperienced Alaska governor, and her public performance, for McCain's decline.

"She's lost confidence in most of the people on the plane," said a senior Republican who speaks to Palin, referring to her campaign jet. He said Palin had begun to "go rogue" in some of her public pronouncements and decisions.

"I think she'd like to go more rogue," he said.

The emergence of a Palin faction comes as Republicans gird for a battle over the future of their party: Some see her as a charismatic, hawkish conservative leader with the potential, still unrealized, to cross over to attract moderate voters. Anger among Republicans who see Palin as a star and as a potential future leader has boiled over because, they say, they see other senior McCain aides preparing to blame her in the event he is defeated.

"These people are going to try and shred her after the campaign to divert blame from themselves," a McCain insider said, referring to McCain's chief strategist, Steve Schmidt, and to Nicolle Wallace, a former Bush aide who has taken a lead role in Palin's campaign. Palin's partisans blame Wallace,

Gov. Palin's denial of this report is here: http://www.cbsnews.com/blogs/2008/10/25/politics/fromtheroad/entry4545327.shtml

There would be no need for these post-mortems- the election can still be won- the states that we need are Palin states- and if they would let her send out a mailing asking for money to get her a national address and national ads---the McCain camp can get by the Pravda media.

Sarah should do things how Sarah wants to do things. I trust her instincts.

Politico has done a hatchet job on Palin a couple of times.

Botched rollout and tarnished public image...Even though the statement was untrue and has been shown as fictitious, there is truth that there was a botched rollout and mishandling of Palin. I'd say let Palin do as she pleases, she's shown that she has more metal than the other three in the campaign.

Ben and the boys at Politico are just counting down to the Election night hot tub party with Chuck Todd, Frank Luntz, & David Rodham Gergen, hosted by Chris Matthews and Keith Olberman.

Palin is why McCain isn’t down 40 points right now.

It’s politico!

They have fabricated multiple unsourced stories about Palin and McCain being at odds.

They pull out this bit every 10 days. No one at FR is fooled.

Handlers forget who they work for.

Perhaps they should be sent to CA to go the GOP GOTV work.

Baker said it best, fire someone to remind people WHO they work for.

Politico is just the whine and brie crowd voice.

Politico, as a Democratic organ, is veeery interesting in reporting (or manufacturing) stories about conflicts between Republicans. So then, what about the massive defection to McCain by Hillary supporters?

Crickets.

Me, too, and anybody that says McCain would be farther ahead if he hadn’t picked Palin is fooling themselves...BIG TIME. Who has the largest attended rallies...Palin. Just heard from two Democrats yesterday...they don’t like McCain, don’t trust Obama, but they like Palin, so they’ll be voting for McCain/Palin. I don’t buy the press that she’s brought down the ticket...t’aint so!

Frankly if they had used her on the trail earlier and let her loose then McCain would have been a lot better off. Instead the Bush types who did such a wonderful job with his message the past few years kept her on a leash.

Why does Palin attract tens of thousands of people? Why does she impress people that are not the WSJ repubs? Why does she represent the base better than McCain does?

McCain is only competitive because of her.

Divide and conquer-an old strategy. The Dems are throwing everything at Sarah to sidetrack or deter her. They will not be successful.

No surprise here.

I was involved in a number of congressional races in this area by pretty solid conservative REPUBLICANS.

Invariably, when the candidate began to appear that he might not be someone who would “stay on the reservation” once in Washington, the RNC would send in a FREE CAMPAIGN CONSULTANT— who promptly sabotaged the race to the point where the candidate was certain to NEVER get to D.C. in a professional capacity.

I think Sarah may have this figured out and now poses a danger to the RNC poobahs.

I wish we could ban the use of unnamed sources in media stories. Using unnamed sources allows you to say anything without ever having to prove it.

We decided to set up a new website over this weekend called “The Obama Disaster.com” to highlight all of the reasons why the election of Obama as President is a very, very bad idea!! We need everyone’s help to gather all of the articles and information about the effects upon the stock market, the economy, small businesses, lost jobs, more mortgage defaults, home prices, taxes, your 401(k), mandatory health care, more liberal programs, more government, the Supreme Court, marriage, religious freedom, free speech, less freedom, etc.
