Gore wins Florida while the Polls still open in the Panhandle.

No one ever mentions how many Bush voters left long lines and went home where Bush won by over 70% of the vote.

Truman didn't like Communists.

I don't think Truman would like Mr. Obama

The headline stating that Dewey Defeats Truman and the photo op were both gimmicks. Neither had anything to do with polls. The paper printed two headlines, one with Truman winning and the other with Dewey winning — it was a tight race — and they needed to be ready for any eventuality. Someone on Truman’s staff got the idea of giving him the discarded headline as a joke.

I, for one, have never been polled in an election. Never. The fact that so many polls can be taken and reported on daily is fishy. I don’t buy into them.

The problem I see is that so many Obama supporters have bought in to them, hook line and sinker. They are going to be mighty angry on election day when it doesn’t go their way. I will be glad not to be living in a major city. I am very uneasy but have planned for the worst and hope for the best.

btw, the re-emergence of the Bulletin has been one of the most refreshing things to happen in Philly in a long time. I wish you well.

I think if you read the article I mention that the paper did what they did because of pre-election polling and early returns. I don’t know about your two headline claim.

However, the “Dewey” incident is symbolic of the larger issue. It is not the most important part of the article.

I would encourage you to read the article. Especially what the academicians told me.

Two headlines were standard stuff for stories that conflicted with deadlines and print schedules — the world series, for instance. Had to do with competition among newspapers.
They would actually write and typeset two different stories.

From my perspective Mac didn’t run a great campaign. Some of it wasn’t his fault, such as the national priorities shifting from war to economics. Some of it was clearly just wrong-headed, such as rushing back to DC for the bail out session.

He still has a chance to turn it around —

I think you’re right. McCain has not run a great campaign.

His choice of Palin saved it for him otherwise it would have been Bob Dole II, when he had a real anchor on his ticket, the sanctimonius Jack “ I am one of the few Republicans who is not racist” Kemp.

BTW I’m sure you know Palin’s name was kicking around for a while as VP for any nominee not just McCain.

He made two huge mistakes —

A)He said he wasn’t an economics expert early on. Why? What’s the point of admitting something like that?

B) Then he said the economy was fundamentally sound. He should have known better.

If I was his campaign manager, I’d go for a hail mary pass about now. A major speech that explains the mess — not even proposing solutions, but just explaining it.

That's not true.

The release of the "Dewey Defeats Truman" headline was done based on early returns. As later returns came in, they rushed to print an edition that had Truman winning, and they recalled the earlier ones.

There are also other errors on the front page of the paper, as many of the experienced staff were on strike. Some of the type is upside down, and errors are literally "X"ed out (for those old enough to recall typewriters, it's <backspace><X> -- you young'uns ask an adult about typewriters... ;-)

Ha! I didn’t know about the strike. The story I heard was the one I related. But your version sounds plausible.
