The "socialist" label that Sen. John McCain and his GOP presidential running mate Sarah Palin are trying to attach to Sen. Barack Obama actually has long and very ugly historical roots.
Those freedom fighters included the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., who led the Civil Rights Movement; W.E.B. Du Bois, who in 1909 helped found the NAACP which is still the nation's oldest and largest civil rights organization; Paul Robeson, a famous singer, actor and political activist who in the 1930s became involved in national and international movements for better labor relations, peace and racial justice; and A. Philip Randolph, who founded and was the longtime head of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters and a leading advocate for civil rights for African Americans.
McCain and Palin have simply reached back in history to use an old code word for black. It set whites apart from those deemed unAmerican and those who could not be trusted during the communism scare.
Shame on McCain and Palin.

Words mean things and word meanings are found in dictionaries.
So I looked up the word “socialist” in two dictionaries and there are no racial connotations in the word.
Conclusion: It appears to me that the Kansas City Star is promoting racial hatred.
When all you have is a hammer....
Plungers are code for Hangman’s Nooses. Just wait.
anything spoken by a non-liberal is a racist code-word.
Michael Savage is right. Liberalism is a mental disorder.
Kansas City Star doesn't give a crap about race...they are puppets left over puppets from the KGB...commies killed MLK because he was trying to build a bridge between races through Christianity...can't have that. Religions are a big "no no' for fascist governments.
As Thomas Sowell points out, the number of blacks owning and operating small businesses took off after the Civil War. The welfare state is what inevitably squashed that entrepreneurial spirit in the black community.
So, as if we didn’t already know, the author is so full of excrement that I’d retreat to safe 1000-yard radius for when he eventually pops.
The truth is racist.
I feel the same way. I’m getting damn tired of a media that casts the McCain campaign as racist. God help Obama and the media if he gets elected. This is exactly the way Chavez won, rallying the poor with giveaways while attacking those who create jobs. This will not stand in America. This is not Democracy this is a coup!
A certain portion of the population is dumbed down beyond redemption. Ripe for dhimmi.
I have to agree with the columnist:
Shame on McCain and Palin.....
for not hitting this a whole lot harder-they should be trumpeting it from the rooftops.
A significant percentage of people are telling pollsters they plan to vote for him to avoid being considered a racist, even though they really don't plan to vote for him.
King did a lot more than “flirt” with Socialism. Look up Jack O’Dell, Bayard Rustin, Stanley Levison, to name just 3.
It’s the main reason why the FBI started wiretaps-although contrary to popular belief, J. Edgar Hoover didn’t initiate this on his own-he was acting on orders from his boss, Bobby Kennedy, who was acting on orders from his boss, John F. Kennedy. I think JFK drafted the Exec. Order for this in Oct 1963, a month or so before his death.
‘Socialist’ most evokes white Europeans in the eyes of most every normal, rational adult.
I can’t say I’m an expert on King’s life, but I do know that he was a lifelong Republican, which was only natural since all black people were Republicans before the sixties generation switched things up. Being a thouroughgoing Christian, I’d assume he was a social conservative as well. Being a revolutionary, however, couldn’t help but push him in the other direction.
If I had to venture a guess, I’d say his opposition to the Vietnam War (started by the Democrats, by the way) and his constant elbow-rubbing with radicals gradually warped his mind into buying into more of a liberation theology view of the world. But that’s just a guess.
“Socialist most evokes white Europeans in the eyes of most every normal, rational adult.”
There was a time when it evoked “Jew” in many people’s eyes, partly because of the Nazis, who were socialists themselves anyway. Historians I’ve read conclude that within the Russian Jewish community during the Bolshevik revolution (or coup, to be more precise) there was a higher statistical propensity for communism than in other racial groups. However, there was nothing near a Jewish majority in the rank and file or leadership of the communist movement. So there’s that.
