U.S. manufacturer recalls 1.59 million cribs

By Elinor Comlay Mon Oct 20, 10:14 pm ET

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Delta Enterprises recalled almost 1.6 million cribs, made in China, Indonesia and Taiwan, on Monday after it said two babies died.

The company did not provide any details on the deaths of the two infants and declined to answer any questions.

The family-owned company that sells cribs, strollers and other products for babies, said the recalled cribs were no longer available in stores.

The New York-based company said it contacted the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and was arranging to provide replacement and repair parts to customers that bought the cribs between 1995 and 2005.

One kind of crib, which uses a mechanism known as a 'spring peg' to lower the crib side, was made in China. Delta Enterprises said it would contact the customers who bought 600,000 of these cribs to send them additional parts to make the mechanism safer.

The other 985,000 cribs under recall, made in Indonesia and Taiwan, use safety pegs in the gate mechanism that customers must install.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission was expected to have a statement on Tuesday, the company said.

Jack Gutt, spokesman for Delta Enterprise, declined to comment on the size of the company and the cost of the recall, and U.S. CPSC officials could not be reached for comment.

Has anyone seen any stats on babies who die from sleeping on or in something other than a crib? I just wonder if we are looking for perfection where the alternatives might be just as risky.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Administration, 64 babies die each year sleeping in adult beds.

Misleading headline - they are not an American manufacturer. American manufacturers make things in America. They are an American importer of Chinese made inferior goods.

"known as a 'spring peg' to lower the crib side,"

I had to use some PVC pipe to manufacture a fix for my granddaughter's crib.

The crib has now been trashed and the sides are being used as dog gates by other people.

What I wanna know is, who designed the crib? Was there any testing done? Seems to me that the responsibility might be more than just with the Chinese manufacturer.

Looking at this purely on a statistical basis, a good argument can be made that these cribs SAVE baby lives

“How did we make it to adulthood?”

Ya beat me to it, but let me just add:

“How did we make it to adulthood without the care of Mother Government?” *SMIRK*

As a child, some of my fondest memories are those of falling asleep under the card table while the adults played cards, smoked like fiends and drank until dawn. I’ve slept on pool tables with pillows all around me as a baby, and in the dog’s bed. Mom has photos. :)

I am SO glad I am done raising my boys. Two are in their early 20’s and one will be 19 this December. When they were little, I’d let them sleep wherever they ‘passed out’ at the end of a l-o-n-g, hectic day! We’re a pretty ‘outdoorsy’ family, so it wasn’t unusual for them to sleep in a tent or in a hammock under the stars when they were little.

Heck, many summers we just set up “camp” out on the back deck and eventually fell asleep in sleeping bags while we watched the stars; for WEEKS on end!

Oh! And the back of the pick-up truck was always a great place to sleep, too. ;)

I wonder how many times over Mother Government would’ve tried to take my boys from me had she known how ‘abused’ they were, LOL!
