The "socialist" label that Sen. John McCain and his GOP presidential running mate Sarah Palin are trying to attach to Sen. Barack Obama actually has long and very ugly historical roots.
J. Edgar Hoover, director of the FBI from 1924 to 1972, used the term liberally to describe African Americans who spent their lives fighting for equality.
Those freedom fighters included the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., who led the Civil Rights Movement; W.E.B. Du Bois, who in 1909 helped found the NAACP which is still the nation's oldest and largest civil rights organization; Paul Robeson, a famous singer, actor and political activist who in the 1930s became involved in national and international movements for better labor relations, peace and racial justice; and A. Philip Randolph, who founded and was the longtime head of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters and a leading advocate for civil rights for African Americans.
McCain and Palin have simply reached back in history to use an old code word for black. It set whites apart from those deemed unAmerican and those who could not be trusted during the communism scare.

Shame on Lewis for playing the old race card, and voting for Obama because of the color of his skin. Racist.
No, and that's the point.
“The “socialist” label that Sen. John McCain and his GOP presidential running mate Sarah Palin are trying to attach to Sen. Barack Obama actually has long and very ugly historical roots.”
Yes. It refers to socialists! That’s pretty damn ugly.
This is just stupid. With reasoning like this you couldn’t call anyone a socialist, even if they are one!
I live in Kansas City and have to see this guys opinions all the time. I would say 25% of his columns are about race and pulling the race card in any way he can. He can take any word or any situation and call it racist. A socialist is a socialist and it is not race related.
An aptly titled book:
And this would only get worse if he's elected.
Life is so much better without their spew.
Life is so much better without their spew.
Rich ---> Code Word For Whitey
Conservative ---> Bible Thumper
Redneck ---> Gun Nut
Christian ---> Homophobe
LOL Everything is racist to these idiots
So what ARE you supposed to call a socialist mulatto?
This is almost laughable. The Democratic Socialists of America used to have an essay on their web site that explained that during the 1930s, the socialist activists realized that the word, “socialist” was frightening to the “colored” population, so they came up with the term, progressive.
The socialists had not yet come up with their “victim” strategy and were solely interested in limiting the growth of what they saw as an impoverished under culture of society. This was before they realized that they could not drag some people out of poverty and that they would gain more power by dragging the rest of us down. Only the elite will remain untouched by the socialist strategy.
That man needs some serious dental work...............

Running stories from "The Onion" would be an improvement in the quality, integrity, and honesty for the "Red Star." Even if it were plagiarized.
Mark
He’s a real life Steve Urkel. He’s also a bigger racist than any white man I ever met.
We need a hammer-meet-nail graphic.
So J Edgar Hoover called Paul Robeson, noted defender of Stalin and winner of the Lenin Peace Prize, a "socialist?" but he was really talking about his skin color?
I need a drink.
Incredible!!
Has this idiot ever pointed out that “progressive” is a code word for “communitst”?
