Charlie Cook Calls the Race for Obama
Forbes ^ | 10/21/08 | staff

Posted on 10/21/2008 8:50:58 AM PDT by pissant

Charlie Cook, founder of The Cook Report and a columnist for The National Journal called the race for Obama this morning, and for congressional Democrats who he thinks will take at least 7 Senate and 20 House seats.

"...today it seems very unlikely that the focal point of this election is going to shift away from the economy. And as long as the economy is the focal point, it's difficult to see how this gets any better for Republicans up or down the ballot. It's sobering to think of the magnitude an event would have to have to pull voters minds off the economy..." Cook wrote.

Actually, he predates Carville. Carville only became prominent after Clinton’s election. IIRC, he was a crony of former Baton Rouge mayor and LSU quarterback, the late Pat Screen.

Cook is from North Louisiana and hitched his wagon to the J. Bennett Johnson gang. I don’t ever recall Cook and Carville being allied so much, except to the extent that all Louisiana Democrats hung around with Edwin Edwards.

LOL! There’s a lot of that going around...the same pollsters and pundits who predicted Gore and Kerry blow-outs are sure Obama- some of them even think it’s a landslide...

First, no candidate behind this far in the national polls, this late in the campaign has come back to win.

In 1980, some polls taken within two weeks of the election had Carter up by as much as 10%. Charlie needs to go back and redo his homework.

That’s funny, Charlie, because by my calendar, the people HAVE NOT SPOKEN YET.

Speaking of Edwards, when is he supposed to get out of jail?

“First, no candidate behind this far in the national polls, this late in the campaign has come back to win.”

WTF? Obama’s national lead is within the margin of error in most polls, isn’t it?

Well...sort of, the polls are pretty wild right now, one has it down to a 1 pt race, Zogby, who had been consistent, has Obama pulling ahead.

It is just to early to call right now, that is why Cook is being foolish.

As I recall the call for Florida for Gore happened even before the whole State of Florida had voted.

Don’t know if it was only Brokaw and NBC though.

And you NEVER hear about it now. Ever. It’s only that Florida was “stolen” from Gore when he couldn’t cherry pick the recount.

The Democrats are the INCUMBENTS, very unpopular, and have done the WRONG THING. IF WE WANT CHANGE FROM THIS INCOMPETENT CONGRESS, WE NEED TO DEFEAT THE DEMOCRATS:

and memo to Cook ... it’s not over - not YET:

Johnson must not have been as corrupt as the usual Louisiana Democrat, I don’t remember any scandals about him!

Replay from 2004: Charlie Cook: ‘Looks good for Kerry’

I was just wondering what stellar predictions Cook had in 04. Thanks for the link and the research! Not so much 'predicting' as trying to 'steer' voters to their side.

I often disagree with Charlie, but I learned the hard way never to make a bet with him. Its odd that he is making the call this early, he usually waits until about 24 - 48 hours out and has been pretty close on those calls, albeit his earlier comments have often been off the mark, as is true with most of the pundits.

In this case, I would have to agree with him, especially on the House and Senate if the election were today. Fortunately, the election is not today and while a candidate this far behind at this stage may never have made up the gap, this is not a normal election and lots of people have deep seated doubts about the CHOSEN ONE. Can those doubts about BHO be translated into votes for McCain? We’ll see. Certainly hope so.
