Bear-attack survivor harassed by animal rights crusaders
National Post ^ | 10/20/2008 | Katie Mercer

A B.C. man who clubbed a bear to death in self-defence is now defending himself from a smear campaign.

Jim West of 70 Mile House says angry animal-rights crusaders have been harassing him at home and impersonating him in e-mails to media outlets.

"I figure this is someone from PETA [People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals] because I've had some people tracking me down and giving me the gears," said Mr. West, 45.

"I really hate that. I hate confrontations of any kind. I try to be as polite as possible. I'm sorry, but it was simply a life-or-death situation," he said yesterday.

PETA spokesman Martin Mersereau denied any involvement in the smear campaign.

"We are absolutely not involved," said Mr. Mersereau. "We focus our efforts on accomplishing things and this doesn't fit in that category."

Mr. West bludgeoned the black bear to death after it attacked him near Green Lake in the Cariboo earlier this month.

Mr. West and his two dogs were scouting for moose when he crossed the path of the angry mama bear on Oct. 4.

He was walking with his black Labrador dogs when the bear rushed him. The sow twice knocked him down before Mr. West grabbed a large stick and struck her between the ears, then repeatedly hit her, crushing her skull.

Conservation officers put down the bear's two cubs, which were nearby and which the mom was protecting.

Since then, e-mails have been sent to The Province in Mr. West's name, attempting to debunk his story.

Ask her if she supports abortion, especially after the baby has a heartbeat.

Trying not to laugh as I reply, “Well...okay, then!” Why does this remind me of the punchline, “I don’t have to be faster than the bear, I just have to be faster than you!”

“I have a friend who is a PETA nut. She told me that animals’ rights must always be respected. So I posed a simple hypothetical situation:

If she were walking in the forest and a pack of hungry wolves attacked her, what would be she do?

She replied: “I could never harm an animal. I would let them eat me.”

Ask her if one of the wolves was pregnant, would she help abort the cubs?

Killing the cubs was kinda sad, though.

Rabies have rights too. If she gets bit by an infected animal, (A) that animal has a right to exist, and (B) the rabies have the right to overtake her body. < /s >

I recommend PETA @$$wipes all travel up to Kodiak Island and let large brown bears have their way with them...its a win, win situation. We would get rid of PETA and PETA would die the way they want....tasty and stupid.

Practically word for word of a left-wing loon in Flagstaff when several hikers had been stalked by a mountain lion. Game and Fish finally had to take care of it.

“She replied: “I could never harm an animal. I would let them eat me.””

WOW! She honestly said that!? Mostly they change the subject with a smirk on their faces, or they come back with some condescending snot-a$$ remark to the effect of such a thing not going to happen, then change the discussion topic all together.

Wondering if “stupid” is a flavor enhancer. Gives me an idea of what to do with todays Socialist/Democrats.

Do Wolves respond to whistle calls?

What would she do if they were attacking her child or grandchild or any child for that matter? Would she stand idly by and let the animals kill the child? It's a rhetorical question, but these are the sort of people who support Obama. It's no wonder I country is in a crisis.

PETA was demonstrating at Sugarlands Ranger Hdqtrs in the Smoky Mtn Nat’l Park several years ago...I was trout fishing near there and was accosted by some members who were asking, “Can’t you hear that poor trout screaming for it’s life on the end of your line?”

I reached into my creel and pulled out a 10 inch Rainbow, tooka healthy bite out it’s side and after chewing and swallowing, said, “NO...Did YOU hear it screaming?”

The PETA protestor threw up right there in front of me...

Is she a mom or an Aunt?

Would she feel the same if an animal was attacking her child?

On behalf of thousands of hungry wolves, tell her to take a hike.

Get with it. That sounds like a way to reduce defects in the gene pool.

Geeezz- 2008 isn’t over yet, and we have a Top Ten candidate for the Darwin Award List, I think.

IMO, if she were eaten, good riddance. I don’t want her procreating.

As he was walking alongside the river,he heard a rustling in the bushes behind him. He turned to look. He saw a 7-foot grizzly bear charge towards him.

Now continue the story for this atheist: He pulled out his CCW .44 and put down the bear. Then the PETA nuts harrassed him for the rest of his life, sometimes making him wish he believed in a god so he could pray that the god would smite the nutjobs.
